SCOUT - Surface Characterization Open-Source Universal Toolbox

Abstract: Surface topography plays a significant role in functional performance situations like friction, lubrication and wear. A European Community funded research programme on areal characterization of steel sheet has recently assisted research in this area. This article is dedicated to the software that supported most of the programme. Born as a rudimentary collection of procedures, it grew steadily to become an integrated package, later equipped with a graphical interface and circulated to the research commu… Show more

“…The metrology parameters are then calculated in the scale-limited surface S-F in the bandwidth set by the x/y resolution of the scanning profilometer and the measurement x/y length. [35]. Scalelimited roughness components separation is not carried out in the present work, but an example of multiscale analysis performed by the authors can be found in [8].…”

“…Indeed, a proliferation of roughness parameters, termed by Whitehouse as 'parameter rash', has been used to describe the different kinds of natural, manufactured, and modelled surface topographies [22]. Choosing which of these various roughness parameters is the most relevant to describe a surface topography of a specific application remains a difficult task of paramount importance [23][24][25][26][27]. Most often, practitioners retain a restrictive set of roughness parameters [28,29].…”

“…Over the last 20 years, several projects have been undertaken to test roughness evaluation software for profiles [20] and for areal topography maps [21][22][23]. To facilitate this goal, software measurement standards, also known as softgauges, have been defined and shared.…”
