Objective. To describe the prevalence of burnout syndrome among intensive care physicians in Salvador, Brazil, and analyze it for associations with demographic data and aspects of their working conditions (psychological demands and control over tasks).MethOds. This was a cross-sectional study investigating associations between psychosocial aspects of work and professional burnout in a population of 297 intensive care physicians in Salvador. A selfadministered individual questionnaire was used to collect data on psychosocial features of work using the demand-control model (Job Content Questionnaire) and on the mental health of the physicians using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).Results. An elevated level of working hours overload and on-call work overload was observed. The prevalence of professional burnout was 7.4% and was more strongly associated with the psychological demands of work than with intensive care physician's control over that work. cOnclusiOns. Physicians doing highly demanding work (many demands and little control) suffered 10.2 times more burnout than those with undemanding work (few demands and a high degree of control).

RESUMOObjetivo: Transtornos mentais comuns (TMC) possuem alto impacto nos relacionamentos interpessoais e na qualidade de vida, sendo potenciais substratos para o desenvolvimento de transtornos mais graves. Estudantes de medicina vêm sendo apresentados como população de risco para o desenvolvimento de TMC. O objetivo deste estudo é estimar a freqüência de TMC em acadêmicos de medicina da Universidade Federal da Bahia e identificar fatores relacionados. Métodos: Realizou-se estudo transversal entre uma amostra de estudantes de medicina. A identificação dos TMC foi feita por meio do 20-item Self-Report Questionnaire. Resultados: Foram avaliados 223 estudantes. A prevalência de TMC foi de 29,6%, sendo independentemente associada a alterações do padrão do sono, não possuir transporte próprio, não trabalhar e não realizar exercício físico. Conclusões: Estes dados demonstram uma elevada prevalência de TMC na amostra pesquisada e são importantes para subsidiar ações de prevenção de transtornos mentais entre futuros médicos e reflexões sobre o modelo curricular vigente nas escolas médicas.

ABSTRACT
Objectives: To evaluate the interest and knowledge about Medical Ethics and Bioethics in medical graduation. Methods: Transversal and descriptive study. Two different questionnaires were applied with questions about the interest in Medical Ethics and Bioethics and the knowledge about the Brazilian Code of MedicalEthics (CME), one to professors and the other to students. Results: One hundred and one professors and 331 students answered the questionnaires. The Brazilian CME had been read by 86.2% of the teachers and by 100% of the students. The importance given to the discipline Medical Ethics, on a scale from 1 to 5, was similar among teachers and students (4.7 ± 0.7 vs. 4.5 ± 0.8; p = 0.086); however the self-evaluation on knowledge about this subject was higher in the first group (3.4 ± 0.9 vs. 3.2 ± 0.7; p = 0.017). In a block with 9 questions, the right answer was given by 5,0 ± 1.9 of teachers and 5.9 ± 1.5 of students (p < 0,001); the mean of correct answers were related to the reading of the CME. Conclusions: The present study presents unpublished data about the perception of medical teachers and students about medical ethics and bioethics and can be useful for improving the teaching of these disciplines in our medical schools.
