Salt stress is one of the most limiting environmental factors for agricultural yields in the Semiarid region of Brazil. Considering the expansion of areas with sugarcane crops in this region, the selection of more adapted plant varieties to this environment is an essential tool for the sustainability of this activity. Thus, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological and biochemical responses of plants of ten sugarcane varieties to salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a randomized block design, in a 6×10 factorial arrangement consisting of six salinity levels in the irrigation water (0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 dS m-1) and ten sugarcane varieties (VAT 90212, RB 72454, RB 867515, Q 124, RB 961003, RB 957508, SP 791011, RB 835089, RB 92579, and SP 943206), with three replications. Salt waters were applied every two days to increase the soil moisture to field capacity and promote leaching. The gas exchange, chlorophyll content, and total soluble and reducing sugars of leaves were evaluated at 90 days after planting. The highest chlorophyll contents were found in plants of the varieties Q 124, RB 96103, RB 835089, and SP 943206. The effect of salinity on the sugarcane plants affected their leaf gas exchanges and total soluble and reducing sugar contents, denoting the adaptability of plants to the stress conditions evaluated. The decrease of stomatal conductance resulted in decreases in photosynthetic rates in plants of all sugarcane varieties evaluated, except for RB 867515.
RESUMOfotossíntese. ABSTRACT One alternative to reduce the effects of the production instability and of the insecurity of world budget over coffee growers is the cultivation of rubber tree intercropped with coffee. However, the productivity of both cultures is affected strongly by the climatic variations and for the crop system. The objective of this research was to perform evaluations of gas exchanges, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm ratio) and leaf anatomy of coffee trees in cropped in different systems with rubber tree and environment. Four intercropping systems were studied as described: full sun coffee (C), three coffee cultivation lines between double strip of rubber tree (SSCCCSS), one coffee cultivation line between rubber tree strips (SCS) and three coffee plants for one rubber tree in the same cultivation line (SCSCS). The coffee plants of the (SSCCCSS), (SCS) and (SCSCS) systems showed smaller values of net photosynthesis rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration (E) and highest values of Fv/Fm ratio than that observed for the (C) system. The coffee plants cropped in the (
Rubber production is dependent on the availability of carbohydrates in the tissues engaged in latex synthesis. In this study three rubber tree clones were used to study the protein profile, the activities of invertase and sucrose synthase in the latex and anatomical characteristics of the bark, as well as to establish a possible relationship with latex production. The clones used in the study, RRIM 600, GT 1 and Fx2261, differed in latex productivity, from high to low in this order. Although present, few differences were observed in the latex protein profile obtained by denaturing electrophoresis. The activity of neutral invertase was higher than the acidic isoform, and both activities were higher in the most productive clones RRIM 600 and GT 1. The same was observed for sucrose synthase but it is suggested that invertase may play a more important role in sucrose cleavage in the latex. The anatomical measurements showed that the number of lactiferous cells and lactiferous rings per mm 2 , and lactiferous cell diameter were higher only in the most productive clone RRIM 600. Together, invertase activity and anatomical measurements might be useful to distinguish highly productive rubber tree clones. A B S T R A C TAdaptation of plants to saline environments depends on the activation of mechanisms that minimize the effects of excess ions on vital processes, such as photosynthesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll, and organic solute in ten genotypes of forage sorghum irrigated with solutions of different salinity levels. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a 10 x 6 factorial arrangement, with three replications, using ten genotypes -F305, BRS-655, BRS-610, Volumax, 1.015.045, 1.016.005, 1.016.009, 1.016.013, 1.016.015 and 1.016.031 -and six saline solutions, with electrical conductivity (EC w ) of 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 dS m -1. The photosynthetic activity in forage sorghum plants reduces with increasing salinity, and this response was found in the ten genotypes evaluated. The chlorophyll and protein contents were not affected by salinity, whereas carbohydrates and amino acid contents increased with increasing EC w . Soluble sugars are essential for osmoregulation of forage sorghum due to its high content in leaves.
Paclobutrazol application in mango tree floral induction is followed by changes in the hormonal balance and carbohydrates production. This study aimed at evaluating the physiological and biochemical variables of mango tree (Palmer cultivar) by applying paclobutrazol doses via irrigation. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with five paclobutrazol doses (0.7 g, 1.0 g, 1.3 g, 1.6 g and 1.9 g of a.i. per linear meter of canopy) and one additional treatment, with one dose in the conventional form of application (1.9 g of a.i. per linear meter of canopy), and four replicates. The variables analyzed were: photosynthesis rate; stomatal conductance; transpiration; leaf temperature; CO2 ratio; total protein content; reducing, non-reducing and total soluble sugars in leaf tissue and fruit; and nitrate reductase enzyme. The lowest values for photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance were obtained with paclobutrazol applied via irrigation. The highest values for gas exchange were obtained with the lowest paclobutrazol doses applied via irrigation, showing that this kind of application is efficient and that it is possible to reduce the application dose via irrigation system. The highest carbohydrate contents in the leaf tissue were observed for the doses of 1.06 g and 1.09 g of a.i. per linear meter of canopy, applied via irrigation. The carbohydrate contents in fruits decreased in response to the paclobutrazol dose. The application methods and doses applied via irrigation did not influence the nitrate reductase activity.
Metabolic assimilation of nitrogen in rubber tree seedlings grown with nitrate or ammoniumAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate metabolic assimilation of nitrogen in rubber tree seedlings grown with nitrate or ammonium, by quantifying the activity of the enzymes nitrogen reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH). The following treatments were evaluated: nitrogen sources -control, without N application; 8 mmol L -1 ammonium; and 8 mmol L -1 nitrate -, and exposure times -0 and 27 days -, in a 3x2 factorial arrangement, in a completely randomized block design with four replicates. The ammoniacal form favored higher N metabolic assimilation, which lead to a higher aminoacid accumulation. Both nitrate and ammonium assimilations occurred mainly by GS/GOGAT route; part of the nitric nitrogen is assimilated in the roots, with little GDH participation, and the other part is translocated to other organs. Ammonium nitrogen is totally assimilated in roots, with a significant participation of GDH. In the leaves, GS participates in the primary assimilation, as well as in the photorespiratory ammonium re-assimilation, irrespective of the N source, while GDH has a secondary role, independently of the source or of the exposure time. In vitro RN activity is detected only in the roots and stems.
