Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing literature on the pertinence of TALC (tourism area life cycle) to model and analyse mature destinations, using quantitative data and alternative functional forms. With this purpose, this work analyses the recent data on tourist demand in Tenerife (Canary Islands), which is supposed to be playing the role of “refuge” with respect to other competing resorts, when the latter ones present political instability after the so-called Arab Springs, particularly the Middle East and North Africa. Design/methodology/approach To analyse the data, and to explore potential epiphenomenon, nonlinear competing regression analysis were performed (logistic, Gaussian and logarithmic), taking into account some insights from tourism life cycle theories. Findings Some suggestions are presented for political management of these destinations that are still working under a moratorium on tourist infrastructure. Research limitations/implications Once the TALC is accepted – even under discussion – in the scholarly fore, certain incentives arise to identify, interpret and communicate signals of maturity. Public funds and specific policies (moratoria) can then be solicited to political instances. Further empirical research, complementary quantitative approaches, along with new data that confronts the evolution of demand in Tenerife with paulatine reactivation of competing destinations, will be strongly required to overcome the limitations of this first attempt and to properly determine the effectiveness of rejuvenation policies. Besides, additional quantitative data should be considered to explore the potential explanatory factors beyond the time series analysis into models that are more theoretical. Originality/value The results suggest that the diagnosis of maturity was at least premature in the first place, poorly based on data analysis and fast in promoting specific policies whose effectiveness is under discussion even after decades.
Purpose This work aims to explore the behavior of stock market prices according to the autoregressive fractional differencing integrated moving average model. This behavior will be compared with a measure of online presence, search engine results as measured by Google Trends. Design/methodology/approach The study sample is comprised by the companies listed at the STOXX® Global 3000 Travel and Leisure. Google Finance and Yahoo Finance, along with Google Trends, were used, respectively, to obtain the data of stock prices and search results, for a period of five years (October 2012 to October 2017). To guarantee certain comparability between the two data sets, weekly observations were collected, with a total figure of 118 firms, two time series each (price and search results), around 61,000 observations. Findings Relationships between the two data sets are explored, with theoretical implications for the fields of economics, finance and management. Tourist corporations were analyzed owing to their growing economic impact. The estimations are initially consistent with long memory; so, they suggest that both stock market prices and online search trends deserve further exploration for modeling and forecasting. Significant differences owing to country and sector effects are also shown. Originality/value This research contributes in two different ways: it demonstrate the potential of a new tool for the analysis of relevant time series to monitor the behavior of firms and markets, and it suggests several theoretical pathways for further research in the specific topics of asymmetry of information and corporate transparency, proposing pertinent bridges between the two fields.
This study focuses on the use of Instagram by tourism companies. Specifically, it aims to analyze how Instagram empowers individuals over corporations in the digital dialogue, thus balancing the information asymmetry between corporations and stakeholders. Four categories of metrics have been collected to analyze the use of Instagram by companies: presence, impact, conversation, and influence. Additionally, OLS regressions have been performed to identify potential explanatory factors to explain the different behavior of each firm and its corresponding communities. While the use of Instagram by the selected firms is still scarce, significant results are as follows: corporations are using Instagram as an additional channel in their current communication; some explanatory factors account for significant differences in countries, size, and industries; and users are somehow reactive to the stream of pictures and texts disclosed by firms. The presence and impact of companies on Instagram are a highly important source for driving stakeholders’ conversation within the digital arena.
The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to analyze recent data about the behavior of national park administrations on Facebook. As public organizations, they endeavor to proactively communicate information to citizens, promoting transparency and accountability. It is important to study the case of national parks because of their relevant role in preserving natural and cultural heritage and promoting a very rich scenario of policy-making and responsible local and global citizenship. Some insights have arisen for political management of these institutions. According to the analysis of the results, it is shown that there exists a significant presence of these entities in Facebook, even if this type of communication is perhaps in its infancy. The results suggest that a potential factor (country in which each park is located and the corresponding administration style) exists, in order to explain significant differences between parks.
The sustainable development goals (SDGs), along with other internationally recognized frameworks, inspires better policies. At the European level, several institutions are also promoting better mechanisms to face present and future crises including social inequalities, food and energy supplies, and preservation of the environment. Traditional accounting systems in both public and private entities fail to capture these concerns into actual figures and concrete narratives. To face this challenge, several families of indicators have flourished. EFRAG (European Financial Reporting Advisory Group) is also preparing their own European sustainability reporting standards (ESRS), which will guide future European Directives on the matter. So, the years following 2024 will be a key period for the evolution of sustainability reporting, and hence, it is reasonable to consider that publicly owned enterprises are key scenarios. Hence, the aim of this work is to explore emerging reporting practices of region-owned enterprises from Canary Islands archipelago (Spain) and the Italian Abruzzi region.
The Canary Islands conform the most populated ultra-peripheral region of the European Union with almost two million inhabitants, receiving more than 13 million tourists in 2019, in a pre-pandemic scenario. Therefore, the islands represent a very particular setting to explore the impact of the global pandemic in business in general, and also in gender diversity and the situation of women on corporate boards in particular. Firms from several industries were observed in detail, as retail, wholesale, construction, manufacturing, repair and sale of vehicles and accommodation. The study explores the setting just before the advent of the coronavirus to their lives in a region which is obviously highly fragile to these events. The study reveals huge gaps in gender equality, with women less present and with less executive power than men, particularly in companies with better results and from certain industries, which confirms previous stereotypes. Further research will be required by means of longitudinal studies.
