Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodology is becoming widespread with many potential uses, such as facility and asset management for new buildings. Recently, it has also been applied for the maintenance of built heritage, within the so-called Historical BIM (HBIM) field. A BIM model, empowered by detailed embedded information, is an excellent tool to monitor and infer on the behaviour, performance, and deterioration of heritage buildings, collecting and classifying diverse data that can co-exist in an asset model. However, three main issues must be tackled: lack of standardization, insufficient interoperability and inherent complexity of the information. It is essential to balance model's geometrical and non-geometrical features, such as the level of detail accuracy and the quantity of linked information, to make the methodology cost-effective and hence more attractive for end-users. The present work focuses on the development of easy-to-implement strategy to report and monitor damage evolution over time. Standardization and simplification of the procedures are pursued by using Product Data Templates (PDTs) and focusing on interoperability of information through specific provisions of export/import definitions for Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). The developed methodology is tested on the Ducal Palace in Guimarães, Portugal, one of the most prominent monuments of the country.

This paper aims to explore the dynamic behavior of a segmental masonry arch subjected to increasing horizontal displacements of one support. To this end, output-only dynamic identification techniques are first used to track the evolution of the dynamic features of the system under progressive damage scenarios and evaluate their sensitivity to settlementinduced cracks. Considerations on the structural response of the segmental arch up to failure are also included. Then, a numerical procedure coupling linear perturbation and modal analysis is applied to simulate the dynamic behavior of the arch over consecutive scenarios, taking into account the influence of the damage on the structure's dynamic properties in an automatic way. Maria-Giovanna Masciotta obtained her dual-degree PhD in 2015 within a joint programme between the University of Minho (Portugal) and the University of "G. d'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara (Italy), being therefore awarded the mention of "Doctor Europeaus". Since 2012, she has been carrying out her research activity at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), which is the largest research unit in Portugal in the field of Structural Engineering. Her research interests are related to the engaging fields of modal testing, structural health monitoring and damage identification of heritage structures, being author of several publications on these subjects, but also include bio-inspired sensing paradigms and advanced structural analysis of masonry constructions.Alberto Barontini, graduated in Civil Engineering by University of Florence, in 2015, is currently conducting his PhD programme on bio-inspired Structural Health Monitoring systems at University of Minho, in collaboration with University of Coimbra. His research domains include the study of bio-inspired optimization and learning algorithms applied to identification (detection, localization and quantification) of damage and safety assessment. Civil engineering structures are continuously exposed to the risk of damage whether due to ageing effects, excessive live loa ds or extreme events, such as earthquakes, blasts and cyclones. If not readily identified, damage will inevitably compromise the structural integrity, leading the system to stop operating and undergo in-depth interventions. The economic and social impacts associated with such an adverse condition can be significant, therefore effective methods able to early identify structural vulnerabilities are needed for these systems to keep meeting the required life-safety standards and avoid the impairment of their normal function. In this context, vibration-based analysis approaches play a leading role as they allow to detect structural faults which lie beneath the surface of the structure by identifying and quantifying anomalous changes in the system's inherent vibration characteristics. However, although the considerable degree of maturity attained within the fields of experiment al vibration analysis (EVA) and structural health monitoring (SHM), several technical issues still need to be addressed in order to ensure the successful implementation of these powerful tools for damage identification purposes. The scope of this paper is to present a bio-inspired framework for optimal structural health monitoring and vibration analysis. After a critical overview on current methods and tools, three main sources of bio-inspiration are described along with the relative algorithms derived for SHM applications. It is shown how uncovering the general principles behind the functioning of selected biological systems can foster the development of efficient solutions to the technical conflicts of actual SHM architectures and lead to new sensing paradigms for optimal network to pology and sensors location. A compatibility-matrix is proposed to help compare biological and SHM systems and discriminate desired from unwanted features. Such a framewo rk will ultimately assist in seeking for the most suitable nature-inspired solutions for more accurate condition screening and robust vibration analysis.
