An Overview on Structural Health Monitoring: From the Current State-of-the-Art to New Bio-inspired Sensing Paradigms

Abstract: Maria-Giovanna Masciotta obtained her dual-degree PhD in 2015 within a joint programme between the University of Minho (Portugal) and the University of "G. d'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara (Italy), being therefore awarded the mention of "Doctor Europeaus". Since 2012, she has been carrying out her research activity at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), which is the largest research unit in Portugal in the field of Structural Engineering. Her research interests are r… Show more

“…This method is mainly applied to one-dimensional finite elements, such as beams, but can also be applied to threedimensional structures [15]. The combination of modal strains with the bending stiffness of a beam of length l gives the strain energy using the following expression [12]:…”

“…It uses a large number of sensors, intelligent processing terminals, global positioning systems and so on to realize the interconnection between things and people, between things and things, so as to achieve various tasks of the internet of things. IoT has been widely used in smart cities, smart home, smart medical, environmental monitoring and other practical applications [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Research based on IoT and related computer technology is also widely launched [9,10], such as cloud computing [11], target location [12], and mobile network [13] are also closely connected with IoT.…”

“…Structural health monitoring (SHM), an extension of traditional non-destructive testing (NDE) method for civil structures, which implement permanent sensors into structural components and monitors structural response continuously. SHM are becoming an indispensable systems of modern long-span bridges [1][2][3]. The monitored data provides information, scientific basis and performance status for bridge structural design, construction, daily maintenance, as well as decision making.…”
