The aim of the article is an attempt to present the issues concerning self-help activities for children and youth in Poland between the wars undertaken by the Railway Family Association. A particularly important research problem turned out to be the determination of the directions of assistance provided by railwaymen, who, apart from their professional work on the railroad, were also credited with actively engaging in social activities. The article has a cognitive and historical aspect and is based on printed sources, including statutes and reports, articles published in the interwar period referring to the issue under study, and on contemporary studies. The analysis of the sources made it possible to show examples of activities undertaken by the association for children and youth in the interwar period, which were included in the main areas of assistance: care and education, educational and cultural, social and living, as well as health and recreation. They confirm that employees of this professional group played an important role in supporting the youngest members of society.
The aim of the article is to present the activities of railwaymen’s associations and social activity in the period of the Second Polish Republic. Railwaymen belonged to numerous and very diverse social organizations, engaged in charity, cooperative, and sports work as well as local and national initiatives. Railway workers’ associations were one of the forms of supporting the Polish state in solving important social and living problems. Their activity is an excellent example of social commitment – the implementation of educational and cultural, social and living as well as health and recreational goals, not only of the railway community but also other social associations of the interwar period. The article presents the social activity of railwaymen undertaken within the associations, with an indication of their theoretical and legal foundations and practical ways of achieving their goals. The article is based on printed sources, including statutes and reports, normative documents, articles from magazines published in the interwar years referring to the issue under study, and contemporary studies. The presented examples of associations indicate that they played an important role in the socio-political, economic, educational and cultural life of the interwar period. The activities of railwaymen undertaken within the associations initiated many useful actions, which became a creative factor that had a positive impact on the life of this professional group.
The Child in History as the Main Idea of the Considerations STreSzCzenIe: akcentując wątek jubileuszowy, podjęliśmy kolejną dysputę akademicką poświęconą godności osobowej, osobowościowej i osobistej dziecka w sytuacji zniewolenia, utraty wolności, swobody -całkowitej zależności od innych. Może to być zniewolenie, dotyczące różnych sfer życia ludzkiego, np. fizyczne ograniczenie, tzn. uzależnienie czyjegoś zdrowia i życia od woli drugiego człowieka, czy też zniewolenie umysłu, prowadzące do zatarcia własnej osobowości, godności na skutek różnorodnych czynników, w tym -jak twierdził Karl Jaspers -"rozbicia człowieka na dwie osoby" pod wpływem olbrzymiej presji ideologicznej. Powoduje to, że dzieciństwo jako zjawisko dotyczące każdego człowieka bywa nadal zawłaszczane i zniewalane w najróżniejszy sposób, zatracając swój niepowtarzalny, indywidualny, podmiotowy charakter, mimo że humanistyczne ujęcie egzystencji ludzkiej staje się dziś szczególnie ważne i -może -najbardziej ludziom potrzebne.
Emphasizing the jubilee theme, we undertook another academic dispute devoted to the personal dignity of a child in a situation of restrictions, loss of freedom – complete dependence on others. It can mean restrictions concerning various spheres of human life, for example, physical limitation, i.e. making someone’s health and life dependent on the will of another, or restrictions of the mind leading to the blurring of one’s personality and, dignity due to various factors, including – as Karl Jaspers claimed – “breaking a man in two” under the influence of enormous ideological pressure. As a result, childhood, as a phenomenon affecting every human being, is still appropriated and enslaved in various ways, losing its unique, individual, subjective character, despite the fact that the humanistic approach to human existence is becoming especially important and – perhaps – most needed by people today.
