A Corvinus Egyetem Versenyképesség Kutató Központjának negyedszázada tartó empirikus kutatási programja új mérföldkőhöz érkezett, amikor sorban hatodik alkalommal bonyolított le nagyléptékű vállalatvezetői felmérést, immár jócskán benn a XXI. században, az ennek megfelelő kihívásokra fókuszálva. Eddigi felméréseink is kapcsolódtak a magyar gazdaságtörténet fordulataihoz (amelyeket persze nagy részben a világgazdasági folyamatok generáltak) – ennek a hagyománynak a folytatásaként koncentrálunk most a negyedik ipari forradalomra, mint jelenünk és belátható jövőnk üzleti világát meghatározó keretre. (...) A kiterjedt empirikus kutatási anyag feldolgozása természetesen összetett folyamat.
Purpose Following industrial network theory, this paper aims to address network behavior from a focal company’s perspective. Special attention is paid to examining the effect of perceptions of the economic crisis on network behavior. Design/methodology/approach The study is built on a quantitative analysis of an empirical database of 300 companies based on a survey completed in 2013 in Hungary. A focal company network behavior model was developed and applied to investigate the link between variables (valuable customer relationships, valuable supplier relationships, relationship strategy and relational outcomes) and the effect of managers’ perceptions about the intensity of the crisis. To obtain a deeper understanding of the effect of the crisis, structural modeling methodology was applied during data analysis. Findings How crises are perceived has a moderating influence on companies’ network behavior. In a context in which a crisis is strongly perceived, valuable customer relationships are considered more important than valuable supplier relationships; relationship strategy becomes more intensive; and performance is increasingly focused on operations and less on innovation. The main difference in network behavior is found with the management of the supply side. A different level of attention is paid to supplier relationships in a high crisis-perception context than when a crisis is perceived as being less critical. Research limitations/implications Results emphasize the importance of perceptions as a key factor in managerial attitudes, behavior and, ultimately, decision-making. This finding merits more attention from both researchers of business relationships and networks. Practical implications From a managerial point of view, the results emphasize the existence of potentially new opportunities in network management. The reinforcement of attention to the customer during a period of crisis implies the importance of the customer orientation, but also suggests that firms may have unexploited opportunities and more potential resources on the supplier side. Originality/value The paper combines an analysis of network behavior and perceptions of crisis, helping to explain managerial decisions and attitudes. Analysis was undertaken from a focal firms’ perspective and differences were investigated in attitudes concerning both supplier- and customer-side relations. How crises are perceived is a moderating variable of network behavior.
A szerzők tanulmányukban a vezetés emberi tényezőivel foglalkoznak, Csíkszentmihályi Mihály flow-elméletéhez (1997) kapcsolódóan a munkahelyi flow-állapotot elősegítő vezetéshez szükséges készségeket és ezek összefüggéseit vizsgálják. Rámutatnak arra, hogy a játékosítás és a komoly játékok fontos szerepet tölthetnek be a modern vezetőképzésben: az érintettek valósághű virtuális döntési szituációkon keresztül tapasztalatokat szerezhetnek készségeikről, döntéseik hatásáról, egyben fejleszthetik versenyképességet biztosító vezetői képességeiket. A kutatás újdonsága, hogy a flow-elmélet és a vezetői készségek közötti kapcsolatot a komoly játék eszközével létrehozott, kiterjedt adatbázison vizsgálja: a FLIGBY® („Flow is Good Business For You”), a flow-alapú vezetői készségek mérésére és fejlesztésére kidolgozott komoly játék közel egy évtizedre visszatekintő adatai adják empirikus elemzésük alapját. Többszáz magyar megfigyelés alapján, a vezetői készségek közti kapcsolatok statisztikai elemzésével megvizsgálják, hogy a munkahelyi flow-t elősegítő négy fő készséget (a stratégiai gondolkodásmód, a visszacsatolás, az egyéni erősségek felismerése, valamint a kihívások és a készségek közti egyensúly megteremtésének készsége) milyen további vezetői képességek támogatják leginkább.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to explore three key aspects of managerial decision making, namely managerial skills and attitudes, information and performance measurement supporting decision making, and companies' approaches to the management of relationship with their stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach After giving a hroad view of the management practice of the sample, the paper analyzes the differences (by company size, dominant ownership, and performance) of companies according to the routines and attitudes of decision making. Findings -The findings of the research paper suggest that managerial capabilities and skills, and attitudes toward decision making, the information and performance measurement supporting decision making, and companies' approaches to the management of relationship with their stakeholders have a significant impact on the effectiveness of managerial decision making. All these factors play an important role in the competitiveness of the Hungarian companies. Research limitations/implications -This research was based on a questionnaire. Further investigations would lie necessary to check the results by interviews and case studies.Practical implications -Beyond summarizing the main experiences, the paper draws up some recommendations for the business community reflecting on the successful companies' practice. Originality/value -The tiiree factors presented by the paper can constitute a possible framework of managerial decision making in further researches.
