Diabetes mellitus, with adverse neonatal events are challenging issues to all obstetricians and pediatricians, where uric acid could play a vital role. We aimed to assess the relationship and prognostic benefits of serum uric acid measured at about 20 weeks’ gestation in normotensive pregnancy, with subsequent maternal diabetes, and neonatal complications. All singleton normotensive pregnant women with normal blood glucose, serum creatinine, and weight before pregnancy, whom attended Medical City Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Baghdad, were involved and regarded as the case group, on the condition that their serum uric acid measured at 20 weeks’ gestation > 3 mg/dl, but if ≤ 3 mg/dl, they would be registered as a control group. A complete follow up was performed regularly during pregnancy, and after delivery; regular assessments of maternal blood glucose were done up to one year. Maternal diabetes mellitus (DM), small for gestational age (SGA) neonates, and preterm delivery (PD) constituted (27.59%), (43.60%), and (1.97%), respectively in case group which had significantly included maternal DM and SGA (P <0.001). Also, elevated mid-pregnancy serum uric acid was strongly associated (P <0.0001) with maternal DM (5.86 ± 0.69) and SGA (4.78 ± 0.34). Cut-off values of uric acid of 4.76 mg/dl were best associated with maternal DM, while 4.33 mg/dl with SGA. In conclusion, the cut-off points of 4.76 and 4.33 mg/dl of maternal mid- normotensive pregnancy serum uric acid have the potential ability to predict Maternal DM and SGA, respectively.
Background: Early detection of breast cancer enhances the treatment and management before occurrence of metastasis. One of the ways of early detection is breast self -examination which is simp le and noninvasive. Ai m of the study: This study aims to assess the level o f knowledge and practice o f Breast Self-Examination among the female students in college of medicine /university of Baghdad. Material and methods: th is is a descriptive, cross sectional study, the data was collected by using a simple random sampling method, we collect data fro m 200 female medical students from University of Baghdad -College of Medicine, by sharing the link of the questionnaire among students social media group. Results: Age range of the study participants was from 17-25 years with a mean of 20.5 years. Most of them were aware of breast carcinoma, all females who heard about breast cancer heard about at least one sign of it. In this regard, we found that among the (200 students), 98.5% reported knowledge about the subject and 54.5% reported practicing breast self-examination. Doctors (44.5%) were the main source of informat ion on breast self-examination. Conclusions: Though most students are aware of the existence of breast cancer, there is insufficient practice o f breast self-examination. The study highlights the need for educational programs to increase awareness regarding regular breast cancer screening behavior.
Objectives: Assessment of glycodelin (GD) as a marker for unruptured ectopic pregnancy (EP) in the first trimester of pregnancy. Materials and Methods: This case-control study was conducted during June 2016 to May 2017 in the Obstetrics and Gynecological Department of Baghdad University at Baghdad teaching hospital/medical city complex. In this study, 100 pregnant women in their first trimester of pregnancy were included after clinical and ultrasonic findings. Results: Based on the results, GD levels in EP were significantly lower than those with normal intrauterine pregnancy (1.58 ± 1.18 vs. 30.1 ± 11.9). In addition, using receiver operator curve analysis, the cut-off GD level of 9.5 and less had acceptable validity results (100% sensitivity, 100% specificity, 95% positive predictive value, 100% negative predictive value, and accuracy 100%) to predict EP. Conclusions: In general, serum GD is considered as an excellent predictor of unruptured EP.
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age with primary manifestations of infertility, menstrual dysfunction and clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism (hirsutism, acne and elevated androgen). Adiponectin is the most abundant adipokine. It has insulin-sensitizing, anti-atherogenic, and antiinflammatory actions. Objective: Low adiponectin levels in women with PCOS have been largely attributed to obesity which is common among these patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure adiponectin levels in normal weight women with PCOS and its contribution to development of disease. Subjects and Methods: Fifty two (52) women were included in this study with age range (21-34 years). Subjects were divided into two groups: group A: twenty seven (27) women with PCOS and group B: twenty five (25) women without PCOS (serve as controls). PCOS can be diagnosed when two of the three following criteria are present (oligoovulation and/or anovulation, clinical and/or biochemical hyperandrogenism and polycystic ovaries as defined by ultrasonography). Results: Mean serum adiponectin level was significantly lower in women with PCOS comparing to those BMI-matched controls (P=0.000). Conclusion:Serum adiponectin levels are not independently determined by the degree of obesity in women but underlying disease may also have some role and this may due to insulin resistance in these patients thus determining serum adiponectin may serve as a useful marker in detecting cases of normal weight women with PCOS.
