This paper presents the study of the degradation of the pesticide atrazine, employing photoassisted electrochemical methods at a dimensionally stable anode of nominal composition Ti/Ru0.3Ti0.7O2. All experiments were performed in a flow cell, and the effects of current density, electrolyte flow rate, as well the use of different supporting electrolytes are reported. The results indicate that the energy per order (E(EO)/kW h m(-3) order(-1)) is substantially reduced when the photochemical and electrochemical techniques are combined. It is observed that complete atrazine removal is achieved at low current densities when the combined method is employed, thus reducing the energy required to operate the electrochemical system. The study of the electrolyte flow rate through the cell indicates that the photoassisted removal of atrazine is controlled by mass transfer. The degradation of commercial atrazine solutions is also presented, and the results show that the efficiency of atrazine removal is reduced compared with that of simulated solutions, due to the presence of the additional components present in the commercial formula.
Agricultural activities can affect the delivery of nutrients to streams, riparian canopy cover, and the capacity of aquatic systems to process nutrients and sediments. There are few measures of nutrient uptake and metabolism from tropical or subtropical streams in general, and even fewer from tropical regions of South America. We examined ammonium (NH4+) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) retention in streams in Brazil and Argentina. We selected 12 streams with relatively little or extensive agricultural activity and conducted whole‐stream nutrient additions and measurements of gross primary production and ecosystem respiration. We used multiple linear regression to determine potential drivers of nutrient uptake metrics across the streams. Nutrient concentrations and retention differed significantly between land use categories. Both NH4+ and SRP concentrations were higher in the agricultural sites (means of 161 and 495 μg l–1, respectively), whereas metabolic rates were slower and transient storage was smaller. Our analysis indicated that agriculture increased ambient uptake lengths and decreased uptake velocities. The regression models revealed that ambient SRP had a positive effect on NH4+ uptake and vice versa, suggesting strong stoichiometric controls. Drivers for nutrient uptake in streams with low‐intensity agriculture also included canopy cover, temperature, and ecosystem respiration rates. Nutrient assimilation in agricultural sites was influenced by a higher number of variables (gross primary production for SRP, discharge, and transient storage for both nutrients). Our results indicate agricultural activity changes both the magnitude of in‐stream nutrient uptake and the mechanisms that control its variation, with important implications for South American streams under agricultural intensification.

While excess phosphorus typically results in the eutrophication of inland waters, there is growing evidence that excess nitrogen (N) and the availability of different N forms influence phytoplankton community composition, often favoring potentially toxic genera. In this study, the environmental dynamics, phytoplankton community structure, and N uptake rates were investigated in two tropical reservoirs. Phytoplankton ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3−) acquisition was assessed through 15N addition experiments over 2 years. We found that changes in ambient nutrient concentrations and temperature influenced different phytoplankton groups, which tended to have different N uptake strategies. The preferred N‐source by Cyanobacteria was NH4+ while Dinophyceae and other groups seemed adapted to also take up NO3−, possibly due to competition. Potential uptake rates (maximum of 8.5 μM‐N hr−1 for NH4+ and 1.3 μM‐N hr−1 for NO3−) were high in comparison to previous reports from temperate freshwater or marine systems, likely due to elevated algal biomass and temperature. When normalized to biomass as chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a), specific uptake rates varied between 0.01–3.4 μmol‐N μgChl‐a−1 day−1 for NH4+ and <0.01–0.8 μmol‐N μgChl‐a−1 day−1 for NO3− and were comparable to those reported for other eutrophic and hypereutrophic aquatic systems. In addition, higher temperatures favored Cyanobacteria (e.g., Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and Microcystis aeruginosa), while a more diverse community was found during colder months. Results highlight how high loading of reduced forms of nitrogen and high temperatures can exacerbate harmful Cyanobacteria blooms in tropical reservoirs and be a concern for drinking water quality.
