In this paper the authors report and discuss limnological information for reservoirs in Brasil including physical, chemical and biological data in order to provide an insight into some basic mechanisms and interrelationships of forcing functions, biological and biogeochemical factors useful for management.The introduction of ecotechnological measures to control, reduce eutrophication, suspended mater input and to recover water quality, is very urgent.Basic theoretical problems of reservoirs structure and function are discussed as well as the introduction of new techniques such as satellite image to improve management.

Determining reference concentrations in rivers and streams is an important tool for environmental management. Reference conditions for eutrophication-related water variables are unavailable for Brazilian freshwaters. We aimed to establish reference baselines for São Paulo State tropical rivers and streams for total phosphorus (TP) and nitrogen (TN), nitrogen-ammonia (NH(4) (+)) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) through the best professional judgment and the trisection methods. Data from 319 sites monitored by the São Paulo State Environmental Company (2005 to 2009) and from the 22 Water Resources Management Units in São Paulo State were assessed (N = 27,131). We verified that data from different management units dominated by similar land cover could be analyzed together (Analysis of Variance, P = 0.504). Cumulative frequency diagrams showed that industrialized management units were characterized by the worst water quality (e.g. average TP of 0.51 mg/L), followed by agricultural watersheds. TN and NH(4) (+) were associated with urban percentages and population density (Spearman Rank Correlation Test, P < 0.05). Best professional judgment and trisection (median of lower third of all sites) methods for determining reference concentrations showed agreement: 0.03 & 0.04 mg/L (TP), 0.31 & 0.34 mg/L (TN), 0.06 & 0.10 mg-N/L (NH(4) (+)) and 2 & 2 mg/L (BOD), respectively. Our reference concentrations were similar to TP and TN reference values proposed for temperate water bodies. These baselines can help with water management in São Paulo State, as well as providing some of the first such information for tropical ecosystems.

The cyanobacterial population in the Cajati waste stabilization pond system (WSP) from São Paulo State, Brazil was assessed by cell isolation and direct microscope counting techniques. Ten strains, belonging to five genera (Synechococcus, Merismopedia, Leptolyngbya, Limnothrix, and Nostoc), were isolated and identified by morphological and molecular analyses. Morphological identification of the isolated strains was congruent with their phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rDNA gene sequences. Six cyanobacterial genera (Synechocystis, Aphanocapsa, Merismopedia, Lyngbya, Phormidium, and Pseudanabaena) were identified by direct microscope inspection. Both techniques were complementary, since, of the six genera identified by direct microscopic inspection, only Merismopedia was isolated, and the four other isolated genera were not detected by direct inspection. Direct microscope counting of preserved cells showed that cyanobacteria were the dominant members ([90%) of the phytoplankton community during both periods evaluated (summer and autumn). ELISA tests specific for hepatotoxic microcystins gave positive results for six strains (Synechococcus CENA108, Merismopedia CENA106, Leptolyngbya CENA103, Leptolyngbya CENA112, Limnothrix CENA109, and Limnothrix CENA110), and for wastewater samples collected from raw influent (3.70 lg microcystins/l) and treated effluent (3.74 lg microcystins/l) in summer. Our findings indicate that toxic cyanobacteria in WSP systems are of concern, since the treated effluent containing cyanotoxins will be discharged into rivers, irrigation channels, estuaries, or reservoirs, and can affect human and animal health.

Saxitoxins are a class of toxins produced by at least two groups of evolutionarily distant organisms (cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates). While the toxicity of these toxins is relatively well characterized, to date little is known about their drivers and ecological functions, especially in lower latitude tropical and subtropical freshwater ecosystems. In the present study, we aimed to obtain a better understanding of the main drivers of saxitoxin concentrations in aquatic environments. We investigated the relationships among saxitoxin concentrations in a mesotrophic subtropical reservoir dominated by the cyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii with physical, chemical and biological water variables. The highest saxitoxin concentrations were 0.20 μg·L, which occurred in the samples with the highest densities of C. raciborskii (maximum of 4.3 × 10 org·mL) and the highest concentration of dissolved nutrients (nitrate from 0.2 to 0.8 μg·L, ortophosphate from 0.3 to 8.5 μg·L). These correlations were confirmed by statistical analyses. However, the highest saxitoxin relative concentrations (per trichome) were associated with lower C. raciborskii densities, suggesting that saxitoxin production or the selection of saxitoxin-producing strains was associated with the adaptation of this species to conditions of stress. Our results indicate that C. raciborskii toxin yields vary depending on the enrichment conditions having potential implications for reservoir management.

The Pantanal of Nhecolândia, the world's largest and most diversified field of tropical lakes, comprises approximately 10,000 lakes, which cover an area of 24,000 km 2 and vary greatly in salinity, pH, alkalinity, colour, physiography and biological activity. The hyposaline lakes have variable pHs, low alkalinity, macrophytes and low phytoplankton densities. The saline lakes have pHs above 9 or 10, high alkalinity, a high density of phytoplankton and sand beaches. The cause of the diversity of these lakes has been an open question, which we have addressed in our research. Here we propose a hybrid process, both geochemical and biological, as the main cause, including (1) a climate with an important water deficit and poverty in Ca 2+ in both superficial and phreatic waters; and (2) an elevation of pH during cyanobacteria blooms. These two aspects destabilise the general tendency of Earth's surface waters towards a neutral pH. This imbalance results in an increase in the pH and dissolution of previously precipitated amorphous silica and quartzose sand. During extreme droughts, amorphous silica precipitates in the inter-granular spaces of the lake bottom sediment, increasing the isolation of the lake from the phreatic level. This paper discusses this biogeochemical problem in the light of physicochemical, chemical, altimetric and phytoplankton data.
