For the determination of the bacterial etiology of the external ocular diseases and sensitivity to antimicrobials, 38 dogs with external ocular diseases, unilateral or bilateral, and 120 dogs without ocular diseases (control group), were studied between 08/2008 and 07/2009 in the Veterinary Hospital of North Paraná State University, Brazil. The collected samples of the inferior conjunctival sac were incubated at 37ºC in an aerobic environment, in blood agar and MacConkey agar, for 120 hours. After the presumptive identification, the bacterial species were identified by the systems APISTAPH (bioMerieux, Incorporation), API 20 STREP (bio-Merieux, Incorporation) and BACTRAY (Laborclin, Ltd.) and incubated in Mueller-Hinton agar with antimicrobials disks, for sensitivity determination. For the risk factors, the owners answered a questionnaire with epidemiological variables. There was microorganism growth in 46 (73.02%) samples, with isolation of one microorganism in 42 samples and two microorganisms in four. Gram-positive bacteria corresponded to 76% of the isolated, Gramnegative 20% and yeasts fungi 4%. Staphylococcus spp totalized 66% of isolated, with S. aureus (24%) and S. intermedius (24%) the most prevalent. With the exception of S. intermedius (91.67%) and S. epidermidis (66.67%), the isolated bacterial species presented 100% resistance to the sulfonamide. The S. aureus isolated presented 91,67% sensitivity to chloranphenicol, tobramycin and amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid, and the same percentile of resistance to tetracycline. The S. intermedius presented 100% sensitivity to amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid and 91,67% to gentamicin and 75% resistance to tetracycline and ceftriaxone. The associations of risk for external ocular diseases were clinical returns (OR=59,50, 7,29
Glucose is an essential carbohydrate for the good functioning of the organism and in normal conditions it is able to maintain the glucose in adequate levels. The glucose can be measured by the portable glucometer or by the laboratory method, which is considered the standard methodology, but with disadvantages such as cost and the necessary amount of blood. The portable glucometer shows itself to be an applicable option because it is less expensive and faster. This prospective clinical study aimed to compare and evaluate the efficiency between the OneTouch UltraMini® portable monitor and the automated colorimetric method for measuring the blood glucose concentration of 48 dogs and 20 cats. The results obtained from the mean of the portable monitor and laboratory method were 87.54 mg/dL and 94.47 mg/dL for dogs, and 85.95 mg/dL and 100 mg/dL for cats, respectively. It could be concluded that the comparison between the methods showed that the portable meter represents an excellent option for measuring blood glucose in dogs and cats.
The purpose of this paper is to determine the ocular echobiometry and investigate its correlation with cranial and body morphometric parameters in 50 adult Shih Tzu dogs. The echobiometric measurements of the anterior chamber (AC), vitreous chamber (VC), lens axial thickness (LTA), transverse lens thickness (LTT), and axial length of the eyeball (ALE) were obtained by two-dimensional ultrasonography. Morphometric measurements of bizygomatic distance (BDIST), frontal-occipital distance (FOD), withers height (WH), thoracic circumference (TC), and body length (BL) were also obtained. The mean of the AC depth was 2.83±0.50mm, the VC was 9.18±0.54mm, the LTA was 6.42±0.32mm and the LTT was 9.17±1.18mm, while the mean of the ALE was 18.82±0.66mm. There was no correlation between ocular echobiometric variables and cranial and body morphometric variables in adult dogs of the Shih Tzu breed, as well as no significant difference of these variables when considering gender and age of the dogs (p ≥ 0.05).
A espécie felina é altamente suscetível a diversas infecções fúngicas, dentre elas, a criptococose.
Palavras-chave: Uveíte, patogenia, helicobactéria, H. pylori AbstractThe ocular system in domestic animals is very complex and delicate, and composed for the eyeball and ocular adnexal. Disorders that affect the balance between production and outflow of aqueous humor can result in variations in intraocular pressure and glaucoma. Syndrome glaucomatous presents approximately 0.5% incidence in dogs and is a leading cause of blindness, eye pain and surgeries for enucleation. The secondary glaucoma are frequent and result of uveitis by bacteria of the genus Brucella, Leptospira, Ehrlichia, and other etiologic agents. In humans, the bacteria of the genus Helicobacter has attracted the attention of ophthalmologists because potentially operate in the pathogenesis of several eye problems, including glaucoma. In dogs, there are no studies that correlate the origin of glaucoma or secondary uveitis to bacteria of the genus Helicobacter. Whereas uveitis with unknown cause in dogs is very common and proven association between bacteria of the genus Helicobacter and this condition
