A protocol using intravenous milrinone, and the maintenance of homeostasis is simple to use and requires less intensive monitoring and resources than the standard triple H therapy. Despite the obvious limitations of this study's design, we believe that it would be now appropriate to proceed with formal prospective studies of this protocol.

Endereço para correspondência: Mauro José Lahm Cardoso: maurolahm@uenp.edu.br RESUMO: O presente estudo teve como objetivo coletar dados retrospectivos das dermatopatias em cães atendidos no Hospital Veterinário (HV) da Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná (UENP), Bandeirantes-PR. Os casos dermatológicos atendidos corresponderam a 31,38% de todas as consultas realizadas em cães e as dermatoses mais observadas neste estudo foram, em ordem decrescente, as bacterianas, parasitárias, fúngicas, imunológicas, distúrbios de ceratinização, doenças cutâneas diversas e dermatopatias psicogênicas. As doenças de maior ocorrência foram, em ordem decrescente, a foliculite superficial, demodicidose, dermatofitose, otite bacteriana, foliculite profunda, disqueratinização seca, dermatite alérgica a picada de pulgas, otite fúngica, escabiose, impetigo, malasseziose, otite parasitária, pododermatite e dermatite atópica. Os resultados mostraram que a dermatologia na medicina veterinária de cães, sendo que o diagnóstico e o manejo dessas enfermidades devem ser considerados de extrema importância aos clínicos de pequenos animais.Palavras-chave: bacteriana; fúngica; imunológica; parasitária; dermatopatias; cães. SKIN DISEASES IN DOGS: A REVIEW OF 257 CASESABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to collect data on skin diseases in dogs evaluated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Northern Parana State University (UENP), in Bandeirantes, Parana, Brazil. Dermatological conditions amounted to 31.38% of all consultations in dogs, and the most common skin conditions observed were, from the most to the least common: bacterial, parasitic, fungal, immune, and keratinization disorders; general skin diseases and psychogenic conditions. The highest scoring diseases, in number of occurrences were, in descending order: Superficial folliculitis, demodicidosis, dermatophytosis, bacterial otitis, deep folliculitis, dry dekeratinization, allergic dermatitis caused by flea bites, fungal ear infections, scabies, impetigo, malassezia dermatitis, parasitical otitis, pad dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis.

Our study showed similar CSF tau concentrations in MS patients with different clinical characteristics. This suggests that tau protein does not seem to be a useful routine clinical marker of axonal damage.

The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of occurrence and variety of intestinal parasites among free-living wild animals. Fecal samples from wild mammals and birds at rehabilitation centers in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo were analyzed by sedimentation and flotation-centrifugation methods. Parasite eggs, oocysts, cysts and/or trophozoites were found in 71% of the samples. Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts were detected in fecal samples from oncillas (Leopardus tigrinus) and scaly-headed parrots (Pionus maximiliani). Giardia cysts were identified in the feces of a gray brocket (Mazama gouazoubira). Among the most common parasites found, there were eggs from Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina and Ancylostoma tubaeforme, and from Cestoda. Several Enterobius sp. eggs were found in the feces of red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus). It can be concluded from this study that despite the small number of samples, the diversity of parasites found was noteworthy. Additional information about parasite endofauna in wild animals is needed, since their presence might suggest that there could be proximity to and interactions with domestic animals and/or humans. In addition, further studies on parasites from free-living wild animals are of prime importance for understanding the intensity of anthropic changes in wild environments.

ABSTRACT.A case admitted at the Small Animals Clinics Service, Veterinary Hospital, FMVZ -UNESP, in May, 1999 is described. A Brazilian Terrier dog, 3 years and 3 months old, weighing 1.7 kg was brought after 2 hours and a half from contact with a scorpion (Tityus bahiensis). The dog showed vocalization inserted with drowsiness. Physical examination showed slightly hyperemic mucous, pain, agressiveness, tachypnea, tachycardia, and discrete erythema on the right forelimb palmar face. An anesthetic block was performed around the stung area using 2% lidocaine hydrochloride without vasoconstrictor (10mL). The animal was asymptomatic, after 24 h treatment.

Vários métodos surgiram com a finalidade de aumentar a acurácia e diminuir a subjetividade na avaliação das radiografias. O melhor aceito é o VHS (vertebral heart size), ou tamanho do coração em relação à unidade de vértebra torácica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi aplicar o método de mensuração pelo VHS em cães da raça American pit bull terrier clinicamente sadios, com a finalidade de se estabelecer o valor médio de VHS para esta raça. Realizaram-se radiografias de tórax, na projeção lateral direita, que foram avaliadas empiricamente e realizadas as medidas necessárias para obtenção do VHS, além da obtenção da relação profundidade/largura (P/L) torácica. Nenhum animal apresentou alteração através da análise empírica. Os valores de VHS obtidos apresentaram distribuição normal, assim como a relação P/L, com média de 10,9±0,4 vértebras para o VHS e 0,80±0,07 para a relação P/L. O valor do VHS apresentou diferença significativa (P>0,05) em comparação com os resultados obtidos por BUCHANAN & BÜCHELER (1995). Porém, o valor de VHS deste estudo é semelhante ao descrito por diversos autores nos estudo de raças específicas, confirmando a necessidade de se estabelecer valores de VHS específicos para cada raça.
