Ketoside der Lactaminsäure ergeben nach Einwirkung von NaJO4, von NaBH4 und Säurehydrolyse eine N-Acetyl-heptulosaminsäure. Ist die Sialinsäure mit dem C-Atom 6 einer Hexopyranose verknüpft, so entsteht dabei das Glycerin-(1)-ketosid dieser Heptulosaminsäure. Für 7 Oligosaccharide aus Frauenmilch bzw. Kuh-Colostrum, bei denen die Verknüpfungsstellen des Sialinsäurerestes noch unbekannt waren, ließen sich die Strukturformeln ermitteln. In der Dilactaminyllactose aus Kuh-Colostrum sind die beiden Sialinsäurereste direkt miteinander in 2→8-Stellung verbunden
