The purpose of this study was to propose a new conceptual framework to evaluate the effective communication skills in different perspectives and develop a scale assessing the communication skills proposed in that framework. In accordance with the proposed conceptualization, in the study five basic communication skills namely ego supportive language, active-participative listening, selfrecognition/self-disclosure, empathy and I-language, were focused on. The draft form of the scale aimed to develop in order to evaluate those skills was applied to a group of students (n=445) studying in 3. and 4. grades at the faculty of education in Pamukkale University. Within the scope of validity analysis, Item analysis, Explanatory Factor Analysis, Scale Intercorrelation analysis were used. Reliability of the scale was analyzed through Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Results showed that the scale classified into 5 factors as proposed in the conceptual framework, and psychometric qualifications were seen acceptable. The findings of the study were discussed and recommendations were given.
The prevalence of digital play devices, including tablets and smartphones, has led to overuse among some young children. The purpose of this research is to examine the overuse cases among young children. Participants of this qualitative case study were five children aged five to seven years, their parents, and a psychiatrist. The data were mainly obtained through semi-structured interviews. Interviews were further supported by close observations, a collection of digital play diaries, as well as an interview with a psychiatrist who specializes in childhood gaming addiction. Then data analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results are presented in five themes: practices, reasons, feelings about overuse, restricting playtime, and content. The first three themes described the nature of the overuse, while the last two themes described the parents’ efforts to restrict their children’s digital play. Findings revealed that the joint effects of different factors triggered children’s overuse, that parents and children felt a range of emotions from happiness to aggression, and that parents’ restrictive mediation strategies were mostly infective.
The Predictive Power of Ego States on Attachment Styles in Teacher CandidatesSubmitted by 29.11.2015 Accepted by 23.01.2016 AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the predictive power of ego states on attachment styles in teacher candidates. The descriptive survey model was used in the study. The participants were 340 undergraduate students (249 female, 91 male) studying in different majors at the Faculty of Education in Pamukkale University. Ego States and Attachment Patterns Scales were used to gather the data. Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. Results showed that secure attachment style was positively related with adult and natural child and negatively with rebellious child ego states; fearful attachment style was positively related with golden and rebellious child and negatively with nurturing parent ego states; preoccupied attachment style was positively related with natural, golden and rebellious child and negatively with adult ego states; dismissing attachment style was positively related with critical parent, natural, golden and rebellious child and negatively with nurturing parent ego states. Moreover, regression analyses show that adult, natural and rebellious child ego states predict secure attachment style; golden and rebellious child ego states predict fearful attachment style; adult, natural and golden child ego states predict preoccupied attachment style; nurturing parents and rebellious child ego states predict dismissing attachment style. Implications of the findings were d...
