Terahertz pulse time-domain holography (THz PTDH) is the powerful technique for high-resolution amplitude and phase THz imaging that allows mapping spectroscopic information across the imaged object. In this paper, we consider most sought after applications of phase imaging provided by this technique and experimentally demonstrate the ability of the method to reconstruct smooth and stepped relief features of an object that is transparent in THz region. Unlike the amplitude distribution, which does not contain any significant information in this case, phase distribution not only reveals the object qualitatively, but also allows the reconstruction of the object thicknesses pattern, even in low signal-to-noise registration conditions. Main limitations of the proposed method, such as transverse resolution and low signal-to-noise environment are carefully studied and mitigated.
Carbon dots (CDs) are light-emitting nanoparticles that show great promise for applications in biology and medicine due to the ease of fabrication, biocompatibility, and attractive optical properties. Optical chirality, on the other hand, is an intrinsic feature inherent in many objects in nature, and it can play an important role in the formation of artificial complexes based on CDs that are implemented for enantiomer recognition, site-specific bonding, etc. We employed a one-step hydrothermal synthesis to produce chiral CDs from the commonly used precursors citric acid and ethylenediamine together with a set of different chiral precursors, namely, L-isomers of cysteine, glutathione, phenylglycine, and tryptophan. The resulting CDs consisted of O,N-doped (and also S-doped, in some cases) carbonized cores with surfaces rich in amide and hydroxyl groups; they exhibited high photoluminescence quantum yields reaching 57%, chiral optical signals in the UV and visible spectral regions, and two-photon absorption. Chiral signals of CDs were rather complex and originated from a combination of the chiral precursors attached to the CD surface, hybridization of lower-energy levels of chiral chromophores formed within CDs, and intrinsic chirality of the CD cores. Using DFT analysis, we showed how incorporation of the chiral precursors at the optical centers induced a strong response in their circular dichroism spectra. The optical characteristics of these CDs, which can easily be dispersed in solvents of different polarities, remained stable during pH changes in the environment and after UV exposure for more than 400 min, which opens a wide range of bio-applications.
Recently, hybrid halide perovskites have emerged as one of the most promising types of materials for thin-film photovoltaic and light-emitting devices because of their low-cost and potential for high efficiency. Further boosting their performance without detrimentally increasing the complexity of the architecture is critically important for commercialization. Despite a number of plasmonic nanoparticle based designs having been proposed for solar cell improvement, inherent optical losses of the nanoparticles reduce photoluminescence from perovskites. Here we use low-loss high-refractive-index dielectric (silicon) nanoparticles for improving the optical properties of organo-metallic perovskite (MAPbI 3 ) films and metasurfaces to achieve strong enhancement of photoluminescence as well as useful light absorption. As a result, we observed experimentally a 50% enhancement of photoluminescence intensity from a perovskite layer with silicon nanoparticles and 200% enhancement for a nanoimprinted metasurface with silicon nanoparticles on top. Strong increase in light absorption is also demonstrated and described by theoretical calculations. Since both silicon nanoparticle fabrication/deposition and metasurface nanoimprinting techniques are low-cost, we believe that the developed all-dielectric approach paves the way to novel scalable and highly effective designs of perovskite based metadevices.
Luminescent molecules attached to resonant colloidal particles are an important tool to study light-matter interaction. A traditional approach to enhance the photoluminescence intensity of the luminescent molecules in such conjugates is to incorporate spacer-coated plasmonic nanoantennas, where the spacer prevents intense non-radiative decay of the luminescent molecules. Here, we explore the capabilities of an alternative platform for photoluminescence enhancement, which is based on low-loss Mie-resonant colloidal silicon particles. We demonstrate that resonant silicon particles of spherical shape are more efficient for photoluminescence enhancement than their plasmonic counterparts in spacer-free configuration. Our theoretical calculations show that significant enhancement originates from larger quantum yields supported by silicon particles and their resonant features. Our results prove the potential of high-index dielectric particles for spacer-free enhancement of photoluminescence, which potentially could be a future platform for bioimaging and nanolasers.
Lead halide perovskites were known to be a prospective family of materials for terahertz (THz) generation. On the other hand, perovskite nanostructures, nanoantennas, and metasurfaces allow tailoring perovskites optical characteristics, resulting in more efficient interaction with incident or emitted light. Moreover, the perovskites are robust materials against formation of defects caused by mechanical deformations and can be efficiently nanostructured by various high throughput methods. In this work, we have enhanced THz emission from MAPbI3 perovskite upon femtosecond laser irradiation using nanoimprint lithography. The formed nanostructures not only improve absorption of the incident laser pulses, but also lead to a non-symmetric near-field distribution. As a result, we have enhanced the efficiency of THz emission from the nanostructured perovskite by 3.5 times as compared with a smooth perovskite film. Our results paved the way for a new application of large-scale perovskite nanostructuring, making halide perovskites competitive with more expensive conventional semiconductors for THz generation.
Laser-driven nonlinear phenomena can both reveal the structural features of materials and become the basis for the development of various translated technologies, including highly intense terahertz sources. Here we realize a modified single-color double-pulse excitation scheme for enhancing the terahertz wave generation in flat liquid jets, and we show that the pre-ionization effect is crucial for finding the optimal input conditions. The experimental results, being supported by numerical simulations, reveal the preference for longer pre-pulses to induce the effective ionization process and shorter signals for the strong laser-plasma interaction. In addition to the identified features of the terahertz wave energy enhancement with respect to the duration change for both pulses and their ratio variation, we state the possibility of achieving the optical-to-THz conversion efficiency value up to 0.1% in the case of double-pulse excitation of an α-pinene jet.
