led, eradication would be extremely difficult. The fact, however, that the spread of the flea, during the five years it has been established in Queensland has been only a few miles beyond the original area infested suggests that wild birds and animals may play only a small role in this direction. If this is correct, an eradication campaign with DDT as the principal weapon of offence is well worthy of careful consideration,
Summary.1. Trials are reported with DDT against stickfast flea of poultry. Two commercial preparations were used, namely, a solvent naphtha emulsion and a "water soluble " suspension. 2. Roth the eniulsion and suspension were 100 p e r cent lethal against the flea in concentrations of 4.0 to 0.5 p e r cent DDT. 3. Complete immersion of poultry gave a very much longer period of freedom from reinfestation than dipping the head and neck only. With complete immersion in 0.5 p e r cent DDT suspension reinfestation occurred after 2 to 3 weeks, with 1.0 pey cent DDT, after 7 to 11 weeks, and with 2.0 p e r cent DDT after 19 weeks. 4. The flea was apparently eradicated from one farm on which all birds were dipped The Australian Veterinary Journal, June, 1947 and the fowlhouse floor sprayed with 2.0 p e r cent DDT suspension.
Dogs on treated farms remained clean for3 to 16 weeks after being washed in 2.0 p e r cent DDT; up to 7 weeks in 1.0 p e r cent DDT ; and for 2 weeks in 0.5 p e r cent DDT. 6 . The solvent naphtha emulsion, even in a concentration of 0.5 p e r cent DDT was decidedly toxic. The suspension in concentrations up to 2 p e r cent gave no indicat, ions of toxicity in our trials, but a concentration of 2.0 per cent, applied f o r practical control, was followed by a number of deaths. Egg taint has also been reported. There were no toxic effects on dogs, but cats were highly susceptible. '7. I t is concluded that eradication may be possible by several treatments in the "water soluble" suspension a t concentrations of 2.0 p e r cent and 1.0 p e r cent DDT, provided all birds are carefully treated. Dipping in 0.5 p e r cent DDT will give good control.
