Magnetic nanoparticles based on iron and its oxides are promising in various biomedical applications. Currently, as a rule, ferromagnetic iron oxide particles with a low specific magnetic moment are used for medical purposes. In the present work, a new method for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles based on the electric explosion of a Fe wire is proposed. When wires are dispersed by high current electric pulse in an inert atmosphere containing less than 5% oxygen, nanoparticles with a core-shell structure are formed, where the core is α-Fe and the shell is formed by a mixture of oxides Fe 3 O 4 and FeO. The oxygen concentration in the buffer gas has been found to determine the size of the resulting nanoparticles, their shape, and iron content. The iron oxide shell protects the iron core from the external environment, preventing the rapid dissolution of Fe containing in the nanoparticles, in contrast to nanoparticles obtained in argon atmosphere. Porous calcium phosphate coatings were formed by the micro-arc oxidation method on the surface of titanium for the loading and controlled release of the anticancer drug doxorubicin. The coatings’ morphology and microstructure were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition was determined with the help of X-ray diffraction analysis. Studies of the hydrophilic properties of the coatings and their zeta potential were carried out. Data on the kinetics of doxorubicin adsorption-desorption were obtained. In addition, the effect of calcium phosphate coatings impregnated with doxorubicin on the viability of the Neuro-2a cell line was revealed. The coating formed at low voltages of 200–250 V contained a greater number of branched communicating pores, and therefore they were able to adsorb a greater amount of doxorubicin. The surface charge also contributes to the process of the adsorption-desorption of doxorubicin, but this effect is not fully understood and further studies are required to identify it.

The calcium phosphate coatings were formed by the micro-arc oxidation method under different applied voltage. It was shown that the thickness, surface roughness, porosity and sizes of the structural elements of the coatings increased with increasing of the applied voltage. In addition, the increase in the voltage led to the structural-phase transformation in the coatings from the amorphous state to the amorphous-crystalline state with incorporation of CaHPO4, α-Ca2P2O7, β-Ca2P2O7 and TiO2 (anatase) nano-sized phases. The micro-porous amorphous coatings formed at a low voltage of 200 V showed the highest adsorption of the doxorubicin. The formed coatings with regulated porous structure and specified phase composition can be used as anticancer (e.g., doxorubicin) drug carrier systems.

Arrays of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are anisotropic nanomaterials possessing a high length-to-diameter aspect ratio, channels passing through the array, and mechanical strength along with flexibility. The arrays are produced in one step using aerosol-assisted catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD), where a mixture of carbon and metal sources is fed into the hot zone of the reactor. Metal nanoparticles catalyze the growth of CNTs and, during synthesis, are partially captured into the internal cavity of CNTs. In this work, we considered various stages of multi-walled CNT (MWCNT) growth on silicon substrates from a ferrocene–toluene mixture and estimated the amount of iron in the array. The study showed that although the mixture of precursors supplies evenly to the reactor, the iron content in the upper part of the array is lower and increases toward the substrate. The size of carbon-encapsulated iron-based nanoparticles is 20–30 nm, and, according to X-ray diffraction data, most of them are iron carbide Fe3C. The reasons for the gradient distribution of iron nanoparticles in MWCNT arrays were considered, and the possibilities of controlling their distribution were evaluated.
