This study proves that the long-pulsed Nd:Yag laser treatment produces an excellent prolonged epilation with no relevant side effects. This laser light, having a 1064 nm wavelength, is minimally absorbed in superficial skin layers, and pronounced scattering up to 5 mm occurs targeting the deeper follicles.
To induce complete and reproducible repigmentation of large "stable" vitiligo lesions by means of autologous cultured epidermal grafts using a rapid, simple, and minimally invasive surgical procedure.Design: Achromic epidermis was removed by means of appropriately settled erbium:YAG laser, and autologous epidermal grafts were applied onto the recipient bed. Melanocyte content was evaluated by dopa reaction. The percentage of repigmentation was calculated using a semiautomatic image analysis system.Setting: A biosafety level 3-type cell culture facility, a surgical ambulatory department, and a dermatological department in a hospital.Patients: Twenty-one patients with different types of vitiligo were admitted to the study and treated with autologous cultured epidermal grafts. Inclusion criteria were failure of at least 2 standard medical approaches; no therapy for at least 12 months; no progression of old lesions or appearance of new lesions; no Koebner phenomenon within the past 18 months; and no autoimmune disorders.
Results:The average percentage of repigmentation in 21 patients was 75.9% (1759.7 cm 2 repigmented/2315.8 cm 2 transplanted). Three patients showed a reactivation of their vitiligo and did not show repigmentation. The remaining 18 patients, with 43 distinct lesions, showed an average percentage of repigmentation of 90% (1759.7 cm 2 repigmented/1953.4 cm 2 transplanted). Conclusions: Under appropriate conditions, cultured epidermal grafts induce complete repigmentation of stable vitiligo lesions. Erbium:YAG laser surgery can supply a fast and precise tool for disepithelialization, hence allowing treatment of large vitiligo lesions during a single surgical operation.
Autologous cultured epidermal grafts induce permanent and complete repigmentation of piebald lesions, in the absence of scars. Erbium:YAG laser surgery is a rapid and precise tool for disepithelialization, hence allowing treatment of large piebald lesions during a single surgical operation.
Oxygen/nitrogen reactive species (ROS/RNS) are currently implicated in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis, drawing attention on the potential prophylactic and healing properties of antioxidants, scavengers, chelators. We evaluated the possible protective/curative effects of a natural antioxidant preparation based on Aloe vera and ubiquinol, against intestinal inflammation, lesions, and pathological alterations of the intestinal electrophysiological activity and motility, in a rat model of DSS-induced colitis. 5% dextrane sulfate (DDS) (3 days), followed by 1% DSS (4 days) was administered in drinking water. The antioxidant formulation (25 mg/kg) was delivered with a pre-treatment protocol, or simultaneously or post-colitis induction. Spontaneous and acetylcholine-stimulated electrical activity were impaired in the small intestine and in distal colon, upon exposure to DSS only. Severe inflammation occurred, with increased myeloperoxidase activity, and significant alterations of the oxidant/antioxidant status in colonic tissue and peritoneal cells. Lipoperoxidation, superoxide production, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase activities, and reduced glutathione content increased, whilst superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were sharply suppressed in colon tissue. ROS/RNS formation in peritoneal cells was strongly inhibited. Inflammation, electrical/mechanical impairment in the gut, and a great majority of oxidative stress parameters were improved substantially by pre-treatment with the antioxidant preparation, but not by simultaneous administration or post-treatment.
The optical properties of trivalent chromium ions in La3Ga5SiO&4 crystals have been investigated by means of absorption, emission, excitation, and lifetime measurements. The particular intermediate value of the octahedral crystal field Dq/B 2.5 causes the overlapping of the Tz with the E and T~levels. This overlap is the origin of Fano resonances in the absorption spectrum and of the simultaneous presence of broadband and narrow-line emissions. Polarized measurements have allowed the determinations of second-order efFects such as the tetragonal or orthorhombic distortion of the octahedron of oxygen ions around the chromium ion. Moreover the temperature shift of the peak and the nonexponential decay of the broad emission band are indications of the disorder present in the crystal lattice. All these results produce a fairly complete picture of the energy levels of Cr + ions in a typical crystal of the Ca-gallogermanate family.ments and lasing performances on this system were already published. "' In this paper we present a new and more detailed study on the optical properties of Cr + ion in the La3Ga5SiOq4 crystal. In particular we have performed absorption, emission, excitation and lifetime measurements from which we derive a complete description of the Cr + energy levels.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
