Geochemical analyses of tills in the Waterford area indicate that till matrix closely reflects underlying bedrock. This is likely due to: (1) efficient glacial entrainment of local bedrock material, (2) limited transport distances, and (3) limited mixing prior to deposition as till. Dispersal patterns of chemical elements show elongated dispersal patterns parallel to south-southeastward ice-flow directions. Small (up-ice) source areas with unique lithology that lie at relatively high elevations impart readily identifiable geochemical dispersal trains. Train lengths generally vary from 2 km to about 8 km, but can be up to 18 km long for some elements. Dispersal patterns for till geochemistry are of similar size and shape to those found previously for till clasts, although extensive pre-glacial erosion and weathering of some friable mafic lithologies of the Mechanic Settlement Pluton has resulted in larger geochemical dispersal patterns relative to the dispersal pattern for mafic till clasts.Our results confirm that, in New Brunswick, a 2 km sampling interval is effective for identification of significant geochemical anomalies in till matrix.Des analyses gdochimiques de tills de la region de Waterford revdlent que la matrice des tills correspond etroitement au substrat rocheux sous-jacent. An indicator mineral and geochemical case study was carried out around the Sisson W–Mo deposit to test modern indicator mineral and analytical methods and document glacial and fluvial dispersal from a significant W–Mo source. Indicator minerals in the 0.25 – 2.0 mm non-ferromagnetic heavy mineral fraction of till and stream sediments include the primary ore minerals scheelite, wolframite and molybdenite, as well as chalcopyrite, joseite, native Bi, bismutite, bismuthinite, galena, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Indicator minerals in c. 12 – 14 kg samples define glacial dispersal of at least 10 km down ice (SE) of the deposit and fluvial dispersal at least 4 km downstream. The presence of very coarse (0.5 – 2.0 mm) indicator minerals in till and stream sediments marks proximity (<1 km) to the mineralized source. Indicator elements for the deposit in the <0.063 mm fraction of till, the <0.177 mm fraction of stream sediments, and in stream water include W and Mo, and various combinations of pathfinder elements Ag, As, Bi, Cd, Cu, In, Pb, Te and Zn. This list of elements is more extensive than previously identified for the Sisson deposit or other studies around W mineralization in glaciated terrain. The study demonstrates that indicator mineral methods, so well known for diamond and gold exploration, have a broader application that includes W–Mo exploration.

Dispersal patterns for till clasts from the Waterford area, New Brunswick, are compared to source outcrops and used to confirm dominant ice-flow directions in a region reported to show multiple and conflicting striae directions. The results demonstrate that the last glaciation produced elongated south and eastward trending dispersal patterns, indicative of the dominant ice-flow directions. Clasts have been derived locally. Train lengths generally vary from 4 km to about 10 km for material in basal till, but can achieve distances up to 26 km because of transport in englacial positions. Felsic and intermediate metavolcanic and intrusive clasts occur in till at locations north of outcropping plutons on the Central Plateau. The till overlies part of the Carboniferous Basin and has been derived in part, from underlying conglomerate bedrock. Since these conglomerate units contain fragments from the surrounding areas including the Central Plateau, they provided a secondary source for some lithologies during glaciation. Glacial erosion of underlying conglomerate units may account for occurrences of distinctive till clasts found at other areas of the New Brunswick lowlands, previously thought to imply northward glacial transport.Les patrons de dispersion des cailloux du till sont comparés aux affleurements d'origine afin de reconstituer les principales directions de l'écoulement glaciaire dans une région où les stries montrent des directions multiples et discordantes. A sequence of late Quaternary geologic events in northern New Brunswick is determined from striation analysis derived from published data, open file reports, and field research conducted by the authors since 1985. These data are integrated with clast provenance and clast fabric trend analysis, as well as information from other studies in the surrounding area. South of the Baie des Chaleurs, a complicated Late Wisconsinan glacial history is preserved in the form of erosive features including nailhead striae, miniature crag-and-tails, and various scars, striations, and fractures. The rarity of sedimentary deposits and datable materials precludes simple stratigraphie interpretation. Based on over 1,000 striation sites, we conclude four major phases of glacial flow affected the area during the Late Wisconsinan: 1) an early flow to the southeast which reflects local Appalachian ice; 2) a second phase of glacial flow to the east indicating a Laurentide ice influence in western New Brunswick; 3) a third phase of glacial flow to the north-northeast, which may represent ice response to drawdown in the Baie des Chaleurs; and 4) a final multidirectional flow indicating localized ice response during the last stages of Late Wisconsinan glaciation. The absence of Canadian Shield erratics in northern New Brunswick is explained in terms of ice streaming along the St. Lawrence channel beneath a southward-flowing Laurentide Ice Sheet. Basal ice debris (including Shield erratics) was apparently truncated and removed by the obliquely flowing ice stream, leaving relatively clean ice in the Ice Sheet as it entered Gaspésie and ultimately New Brunswick.On a déterminé la séquence des événements géologiques du Quaternaire supérieur survenus dans le nord du Nouveau-Brunswick à partir de l'analyse des stries tirée de diverses sources.
