Twenty-one plants used in the traditional treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers were inventoried. Two of them, Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae) and Helichrysum mechowianum (Asteraceae), were selected for chemical screening.
Chemical constituents of the more effective extract were researched using the classical phytochemical methods. The aqueous extract of Cassia siamea manifested the most important antimalarial effect by significantly reducing parasitemia and hyperthermia; this interesting activity of Cassia siamea could be related to the presence of alkaloids and quinones.
