Ethnobotanical survey of presumed anti-ulcer Congolese medicinal plants

“…H. foetidum has been assessed to treat influenza, infected wounds, herpes, eye problems, menstrual pains and to induce trance and possess antifungal properties [ 2 , 26 ]. H. mechowianum is used for the treatment of stomach damage, cephalgy [ 9 , 27 ] and possesses ulcerogenic activity [ 28 , 29 ]. In continuation of these studies, w e extended our search for biologically active compounds from Helichrysum species [ 17 , 18 ] to the protease-inhibiting activity of extracts and isolated compounds from Helichrysum foetidum and Helichrysum mechowianum using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) protease pepsin inhibition assay as pharmacological model for anti-ulcer compounds [ 30 ].…”

“…As an example, M. indica was cited by traditional healers against several diseases in West Africa. Indeed, it is quoted against the traditional treatment of malaria in Cameroon, cardiovascular diseases in Thad, muscular contusions and Togo, and ulcers in Congo (Dongock et al, 2018;Hélé et al, 2014;Ibara et al, 2007). Beninese respondents also cited these conditions in this study.…”

“…The phytochemical analysis of the aqueous extract of Ceiba pentandra previously performed [7] has revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, triterpene steroids, and quinones. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of this extract observed in our study can be explained by the presence of flavonoids [9].…”
