Summary The afferent sympathetic branches of the pelvic plexus in the pig are represented on both sides by the hypogastric nerve which is sometimes augmented by sympathetic branches from the sacral section of the sympathetic trunk. In contrast, the parasympathetic afferent branches are represented by the pelvic nerves (1–2). The efferent branches of the pelvic plexus consist of unmyelinated fibres belonging mainly to the sympathetic system but also to the parasympathetic, and of myelinated fibres which can be divided into fine fibres, most of which are parasympathetic, and thick ones among which those of a smaller diameter are considered as representing the motor fibres of skeletal muscles of the viscera, while those of larger diameter represent the afferent visceral fibres being led through the sympathetic and mainly the parasympathetic system. The pelvic part of the male urethra and the whole of the female urethra receive most of their nerve fibres from the pudendal nerve and some fibres directly from the pelvic plexus. Some of these fibres end in the bulbo‐urethral gland.
Summary Contribution to the Study of the Plexus pelvinus of the Horse The plexus pelvinus and its roots were studied in two stallions and two mares. Nn. splanchnici sacrales were found macroscopically in only one case. The myelinated fibers were stained using the Landau‐Ignestis method. Microscopic examination showed that the sensory fibers were among the myelinated fibers of the N. hypogastricus. The ganglia of the plexus pelvinus, trated according to the Marsland‐Glees‐Erikson method, showed no special features.
The development of cartilage cells was investigated in the articular disks of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ disk) from two groups of guinea pigs age 1 month and 2 years old. There is strong evidence that the presence of chondrocytes in the TMJ disks of the older group of guinea pigs is the result of a biological aging phenomenon and is not related to pathologically induced changes.
