“…Considerable effort has been focussed in selecting low-toxin genotypes, but as the species is cross pollinated, low b-ODAP is difficult to maintain in the field if high-b-ODAP genotypes are grown nearby. High levels of b-ODAP biosynthesis in different tissues of the grass pea plant have been shown to be positively associated with more severe water stress (Lambein et al 1990, Yan et al 2006, Haque et al 2011, Kumar et al 2011. The effects of water stress on the levels of b-ODAP in the seeds were higher in the low-toxin cultivar than in the high-toxin cultivar when plants were grown in pots and under glasshouse conditions (Hussain et al 1997).…”

“…They are also important from ecological viewpoint and even for the food supply of a sizeable section of the world population. Because these plants are very Downloaded by [UQ Library] at 05:11 17 November 2014 hardy & drought tolerant and can yield nutritious and tasty seeds under adverse climatic conditions while other plants fail to survive (Lambein et al, 1990), it is cultivated on several million hectre in Asia and Africa. Extensive research has been carried out in many laboratories in India and abroad since 1950s to find the etiologic agent responsible for lathyrism.…”

“…The biosynthesis of the secondary metabolite, β-ODAP, is very much affected by the environment, its level can double under drought similarly to many other amino acid concentrations in plants reacting to water stress. Because of this, Lambein et al (1990) postulated that β-ODAP may have a role in drought tolerance. Alternatively, Cocks et al (2000) proposed that the higher concentrations found in drought stress environments were caused by a distribution of a limited pool of toxin over a smaller number and weight of seed.…”
