β-cubic phase transition of scandia-doped zirconia solid solution: Calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, and Raman scattering

Abstract: Differential scanning calorimetry and Raman spectroscopy measurements have been performed to investigate the β-cubic (c) phase transition of the compositionally homogeneous ZrO2-22 mol % ScO1.5 solid solution. The enthalpy of transition (1.11 kJ/mol of cation) and thermal hysteresis between β- and c-phases were smaller than those between monoclinic (m) and tetragonal (t) phases of ZrO2, reflecting the structural information that the cell volume ratio of β- to c-phases is smaller than that of m- to t-phases. “…The highly conductive cubic phase is not stable below 650 • C causing the abrupt decrease in ionic conductivity during cooling in the ScZrO 2 [7,8]. It is known that in 11 mol% Sc 2 O 3 -89 mol% ZrO 2 , a cubic to rhombohedral phase transition occurs when the temperature decrease below 600 • C [9,10]. It was reported [11,12] that when ZrO 2 is stabilized with a small amount of CeO 2 along with Sc 2 O 3 , it no longer exhibits an unfavorable phase transition, making this material a very promising option for intermediate temperature electrolytes.…”

“…The peak positioned at 620 cm −1 corresponds to the cubic phase. The peak at 372 cm −1 could be assigned to the monoclinic phase and the peaks positioned at 155, 250, 326, 488, and 600 cm −1 are related to the tetragonal phase [28][29][30][31]. For the as-prepared undiffused and Ni-diffused samples, the spectra consist of the main cubic phase and minor tetragonal and monoclinic phases.…”
