Zebrafish as an animal model for the antiviral RNA interference pathway

Abstract: The zebrafish (Danio rerio) possesses evolutionarily conserved innate and adaptive immunity as a mammal and has recently become a popular vertebrate model to exploit infection and immunity. Antiviral RNA interference (RNAi) has been illuminated in various model organisms, including Arabidopsis thaliana, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans and mice. However, to date, there is no report on the antiviral RNAi pathway of zebrafish. Here, we have evaluated the possible use of zebrafish to study antivira… Show more

“…Thirdly, absence of AGO2, another essential antiviral RNAi component, contributes to embryonic lethality in mammals [81]. However, we can use the zebrafish model whose own AGO2 cleavage capacity is impaired [82], as a vertebrate model of natural AGO2 deficiency to study the function of mammalian AGO2 and mammalian antiviral RNAi [83].…”
