and Aleksići. The trial was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The following parameters were analyzed: tuber weight (g), plant height (cm), stem number/plant, average stem thickness (cm), green mass yield/plant (kg), and dry mass yield/plant (kg). Average tuber weight ranged from 36.7 g (Bosna) to 61.0 g (Lazarevo). Plant height ranged from 1.55 m (Lazarevo) to 2.20 m (Aleksići). Stem number/plant varied from 2.2 (Aleksici) to 5.3 (Modrica). Stem thicknesswas between 1.24 cm (Bosna) and 2.11 cm (Aleksići). The population Bosna had the lowest average yield of green mass and dry mass yield/plant, while the highest mean value had population Aleksići. Broad sense heritability varied from 34.66% (plant height) to 50.99% (dry mass yield/plant). Highly significant positive correlations between plant height and stem thickness (r = 0.874), stem thickness and green mass yield (r = 0.919), stem thickness and dry mass yield (r = 0.902) were established. Helianthus tuberosus L. (Jerusalem artichoke) is cultivated in Europe and other parts of the world as a food crop and ornamental plant. The volatile oils of the aerial parts of H. tuberosus were investigated more than 30 years ago, but no study could be found to date on the constituents of the tuber essential oil. Herein, the first characterization by GC-FID, GC/MS, and (13) C-NMR analyses of a hydrodistilled essential oil of Jerusalem artichoke tubers was reported. Fresh plant material collected in Serbia (Sample A) and a commercial sample (Sample B) yielded only small amounts of oil (0.0014 and 0.0021% (w/w), resp.). In total, 195 constituents were identified, representing 88.2 and 93.6% of the oil compositions for Samples A and B, respectively. The main constituents identified were β-bisabolene (1; 22.9-30.5%), undecanal (0-12.7%), α-pinene (7.6-0.8%), kauran-16-ol (2; 6.9-9.8%), 2-pentylfuran (0.0-5.7%), and (E)-tetradec-2-enal (0.0-4.9%). Several rare compounds characteristic for Helianthus ssp. were also detected: helianthol A (6; 2.1-1.9%), dihydroeuparin (10; 0.0-2.3%), euparin (9; 0.0-0.4%), desmethoxyencecalin (7; traces - 0.2%), desmethylencecalin (8; 0.0-0.4%), and an isomer of desmethylencecalin (0.0%-traces). The essential oils isolated from the tuber and the aerial parts share the common major component 1.

a b s t r a c tAn alternative to the sugar/starch-based crops bioethanol is lignocellulosic biomass, but its utilization to biofuels is still not economically viable. In this context, an increasing interest has arising on the search for specific energy crops that do not require arable lands and are not water intensive, such as Jerusalem artichoke (JA). So, this work consisted on the cultivation of JA on those agricultural conditions and its further evaluation as a sustainable feedstock towards bioethanol. Two strategies of producing bioethanol were evaluated pointing out for the consolidated bioprocessing with the Zygosaccharomyces bailii Talf1 yeast as the best approach for further scale-up, based on energy data analysis and ethanol productivity. Different industrial scenarios were outlined and compared for overall CO 2 eq emissions and energy consumption per liter of ethanol (L EtOH ), using adequate criteria on a cradle-to-gate approach. With no land-use change, no biogenic and no co-products credits, the comparison of the overall energy consumption and CO 2 eq emissions (100% process) from JA ethanol (9 MJ/L EtOH ; 679 g CO 2 /L EtOH ) with sugarcane/sugar beet ethanol (42/29 MJ/L EtOH ; 731/735 g CO 2 /L EtOH ) and with gasoline refinery (15 MJ/L EtOH eq ; 1154 g CO 2 /L EtOH eq ), highlights the JA as an alternative feedstock to be a focus of ethanol research for gasoline blends.
