World first 17% efficient multi-crystalline silicon module

Abstract: The overall demand in reducing the cost of electricity from solar energy has driven the cost of solar modules down. ECN developed an innovative module technology to enable this cost reduction requirement. The back-contact solar module concept caters specifically for high-efficiency solar cell types. It combines advanced module manufacturing design and process with emphasis on manufacturability and performance to provide an effective route toward the reduction of cost-performance ratio of crystalline silicon mo… Show more

“…Climatic chamber testing and characterization (I-V, EL) was performed at Photovoltaik Insitut Berlin (PI Berlin, Germany), where measurements were also performed after 1000 hrs. 3 ECA-I was used in combination with foils with ILD. These foils had Ag-plated contacts applied to copper.…”

“…ECN Solar has developed a metallization wrap through (MWT) cell and back-contact module technology [1][2][3][4]. The back-contact module technology allows a single-step encapsulation and interconnection process of the back-contact cells.…”

“…(1) SILICON-BASED Crystalline silicon modules are characterized by two voltage ranges: 40-45 V for open circuit voltage and 32-38 V at the maximum power point (for modules in systems with an operating voltage of 24 V), as well as 20-25 V for open circuit voltage and 15-17 V at the point of maximum power (for modules in systems with an operating voltage of 12 V). Typical efficiency values for modules based on multicrystalline silicon lie in the range of 13-17% [36], and for monocrystalline in the range of 16-19% [37,38].…”

“…This work lead to the manufacturing of the world's first multicrystalline silicon module to reach 17.0% conversion efficiency [3]. The interconnection process is based on the use of a conductive adhesive which drains the current from the MWT cells to a conductive backsheet foil underneath.…”
