Wood Waste, the Challenges of Communication and Innovation

Abstract: Wood is our material of choice for sustainable and environmental friendly construction and manufacturing of products. Wood has excellent properties for reuse, realized and implemented through a cascading utilization, introducing intermittent product lives. In contrast, wood waste is still a heavily under-valued resource in North America. With current practices of sourcing virgin wood at lowest cost and few efforts to shift wood out of the single-use convenience mode of utilization, true innovation is unlikely … Show more

“…Additionally, only 20% of Russia's harvested wood is used for advanced wood processing. The high efficiency of the timber industries of such countries as the USA, Germany, China, Canada, and Finland, is explained by their focus on advanced wood processing (Wu 2016;Khider and Hubbe 2018;Laleicke 2018;Chen et al 2019) and on the use of secondary wood fibre waste to produce competitive products with high Grinding is one of the most important operations in the production of materials containing wood fibre semi-finished products. Along with other operations, grinding has a decisive effect on the characteristics of finished products.…”

“…However, wood is renewable only over a long time, and the forest potential is limited (Verkaik and Nabuurs 2000;Karkkainen et al 2014). Wood is the most abundant biodegradable material available and has excellent properties for reuse; hence, its use should be maximized (Daian and Ozarska 2009;Laleicke 2018;Malá et al 2018). Thus, the sustainable development of the industry, factoring in the economic, social, and environmental aspects, is becoming of special importance.…”
