Indonesian mangrove declined significantly in the last two decades which has been considered to deliver a negative impact for adjacent communities in small islands. Mangrove quality monitoring was conducted during Nusa Manggala Expedition in 2018, which was aimed to analyze forest structure and healthiness using spatial-temporal investigation in Liki island, Papua. Field data were collected from 10m-×-10m quadratic plots which were distributed following stratified purposive sampling method. Spatial and temporal was implemented using Sentinel 2 imagery on this area from 2016 to 2021. The result of this field study had considered that mangrove in Liki island was in moderate healthiness since the MHI value was between 33.33%-66.67%. It was supported by remote sensing analysis in 2018 which showed that the moderate MHI area was dominant by approximately 42% compared to the excellent area in about 33%. Liki’s mangrove had experienced a declining trend of excellent category from 2016 and reached the lowest area of its category in 2018. In the last four-year observation, excellent areas gradually increased which was covering 57.68% of forest MHI. The dynamic of mangrove healthiness on this island tended to be delivered by natural events.

Extreme weather events are a cause of mangrove forest loss and degradation globally. Almost half of the world’s mangroves are found in the tropical cyclone belt, and forests often experience disturbance in structure, functioning and ecosystem service provision. Understanding the factors that increase the vulnerability of mangroves to such disturbances is a challenge. Using a novel remote sensing analysis combining water class change with vegetation classification, we showed that mangrove loss across multiple cyclone events is influenced by previous erosion history, suggesting that the prior state of the coastline affects susceptibility to future disturbance events. During Cyclone Amphan in May 2020, more than 1,200 km2 of mangroves were damaged and 40.6 km2 of shoreline was lost. Cyclone Amphan caused the most damage out of three recent cyclones, with the most mangrove loss (18.8%) experienced along shorelines that were eroding over the past 35 years. This can be explained by the long-term effect of erosion on the overall intertidal morphology of the shoreline. Landscape-scale mangrove management, particularly of sediment budgets is essential to switch previously eroding mangroves to a state where they can withstand cumulative storm impacts.

Resource management characterized by Common Pool Resources (CPRs) requires collective action for its sustainable management. CPRs with “rivalry” and “non-excludable” features face overexploitation problems because unlike the nature of pure public goods, the use of CPRs by one user will reduce the chances of other users taking advantage of it. This study aims to analyze the most appropriate local institutions and tenure arrangements for sustainable mangrove management in Eastern coast area of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data and information were collected through in-depth interviews involving key informants selected by using snow-ball method and continued by Focus Group Discussion. Design principles for sustainable management of common pool resources of Ostrom has been used in this study as an analytical framework which illustrate the structure of rules established and imposed by the local CPR’s institutions. The findings show that collective action in sustainable mangrove management can be achieved through accepted rules and agreements that are participatory formulated. The agreed norms and rules have enacted as a benchmark for collective action in maintaining mangrove and to enforce sanctions for violators. The success of the community in sustainable mangrove resources management is mainly supported by the existence of several prerequisites that facilitate collective action. It is necessary to strengthen regulations both at the local and higher level through socialization to the community along with the development of incentive and disincentives system.
