This study evaluated F5 breeding lines, which were obtained by crossing five parents of spring spelt from different geographical regions characterized by various morphological and performance traits. A total of 11 quantitative traits were analyzed, including six traits relating to yield components, four traits relating to grain quality, and one trait relating to plant height and sensitivity to lodging. The applied clustering method supported the identification of four groups of breeding lines which were presented graphically in a heatmap with dendrogram. Group I contained 33.0% of the breeding lines, and it was most distant from the remaining groups. It was composed of tall plants characterized by high values of yield components, high fat content, and high sensitivity to lodging. Groups III (30.4%) and IV (17.0%) were most similar and were characterized by lower values of yield components, a high content of protein, ash and fiber, and lower sensitivity to lodging. Group II contained 19.6% of the breeding lines, and it was more similar to groups III and IV than group I. Breeding lines with satisfactory performance traits can be selected from each group and used to breed new varieties with the desired traits.

Septoriablotch epidemic process on spring wheat varieties

The Septoriablotch of spring wheat leaves and ears is one of the most economically significant infections in the Siberian region. In the control systems of Septoriablotch the main ecologically safe element is resistant varieties, which are designed to slow down the pathogens reproduction rate and slow down or stop the development of the epiphytotic process. The purpose of the work was to clarify the species composition of Septoriablotch pathogens for West Siberian regions and spring wheat varieties, to study the epiphytotic process of Septoriadifferentially on the leaves and ears of varieties, and to evaluate the activity of seed transmission of Parastagonospora nodorum. Studies were carried out in 2016–2018 according to generally accepted methods. Septorialeaf and ear blotch of spring wheat is widespread in West Siberia and the Trans-Urals, causing a decrease in yield by up to 50 % or more with the deterioration in grain quality. The causative agents of the disease are P. nodorum, Septoria tritici, and P. avenaef. sp. triticae, and the species ratio varied across the regions and varieties, and within plant organs. In Novosibirsk Region, P. nodorumcompletely dominated; S. triticiwas 13.8 times less common; and P. avenae f. sp. triticaewas a singleton. In Tyumen Region, the dominance of P. nodorumwas disrupted in some geographic locations by S. triticiand P. avenaef. sp. triticae. In Altai Krai, P. nodorumpredominated at all points studied; S. tritici and P. avenaef. sp. triticaewere found everywhere, but 5.6 and 8.6 times less often, respectively. The study of spring wheat varieties of different origins has not revealed any samples immune to Septoriablotch. A differen tiated manifestation of resistance to Septorialeaf and ear disease has been established. Some varieties show complex resistance, combining reduced susceptibility to Septorialeaf and ear disease. Seed infection with P. nodorumin the regions of Siberia reached 7 thresholds and was largely (52.5 %) determined by the August weather conditions. The study of the collection of spring wheat varieties from three Siberian regions has revealed the following trend. Transmission of P. nodorumwith the seeds of varieties was the most active (7.6 %) in Novosibirsk Region and somewhat weaker in Omsk Region (5.7 %). The most favorable phytosanitary situation was in Kurgan Region, where varieties transmitted P. nodorumto a low degree (2.1 %), below the threshold.

In increasing the efficiency of breeding work on the creation of spring soft wheat varieties information about the combinational ability of the source material is of great importance. In 2021-2022 in the conditions of the Kirov region the general and specific combinational ability of 8 varieties and 28 hybrids of the second generation of spring soft wheat was studied according to the degree of leaf septoria damage, grain size and yield. The studies were carried out under natural conditions of development on the leaves of Parastagonospora nodorum as the molecular-genetic affiliation of the causative agent of septoria blotch to this species had been established. As the result of the conducted studies, for further breeding work there were selected 14 resistant F2 hybrids characterized by average values of the resistance index and a slow growth of infection. According to the complex of selective-immunological traits, the hybrid Rosinka 2 × Tertsiya was isolated, combining resistance to septoria with a high mass of 1000 seeds (41.6 g) and yield (410.0 g/m2). The tolerant hybrid of the Stepnaya 50 × Daria was particularly noted, which with a high degree of damage (34.2 %) formed a large grain (42.6 g) and the maximum yield for the experiment (411.1 g/m2). The conducted dispersion analysis of the data obtained has shown that the spring wheat variety Tertsiya (Russia) has a significantly high overall combinational ability (ОСА) by all the studied traits and can be their source in breeding programs. Moreover, the Epos variety (Germany) is the most effective as a source of resistance to septoria; Egisar 29, Niva 2, Stepnaya 50 and Rosinka 2 (Russia) are sources of grain size; Daria (Belarus) is a source of high yield. As the result of the analysis of the dominance index in most of the studied hybrids, the additive effect of genes on the manifestation of resistance to leaf septoria and seeds size was found. The effect of heterosis by disease resistance was observed in 21.4 %, by weight of 1000 seeds – in 42.9 % and by productivity – in 50.0 % of the studied hybrid combinations.
