Well-being Disparities within the Paris Region: A Capabilist Spatialised Outlook

Abstract: 16International audienceThis paper advocates, from a normative point of view, the use of multidimensional, capabilist-based urban indicators and shows that they can shed a new empirical light on socio-spatial differentiation in cities. First, the relevance is discussed of Amartya Sen's capability approach when assessing well-being from an urban, spatialised point of view, and a definition is proposed of a capabilist spatialised well-being indicator (CaS). After presenting the main methodological issues of its … Show more

“…Important neighborhood and community characteristics pertaining to resident satisfaction in residential relocation resulting from urban redevelopment encompass safety and security (Kim et al 2015), land markets and property rights (Irazάbal 2009), and access to public services and community facilities (Brambilla, Michelangeli, and Peluso 2013;Farrington and Farrington 2005;Kim et al 2015;Soja 2010;Tovar and Bourdeau-Lepage 2013;Visser 2001). These are also variables closely associated with amenities as claimed in Clark (2011, p. 100) who stated that natural physical amenities, constructed amenities, socioeconomic composition, and diversity values can be regarded as "central not just for consumption but for economic development."…”

“…First, the urban configurations and social heritages are different between Montreal and Paris. Indeed, in the Montreal Metropolitan Area (Greater Montreal) which represents the reach of commuter movement to and from the island of Montreal and its surrounding suburbs, the most socially disadvantaged communities are situated on the island of Montreal [ 25 ], whereas in the Paris Metropolitan Area, the city of Paris (except a few neighborhoods in the city’s northeast) over represents the less socially disadvantaged communities of the Paris Metropolitan Area [ 26 ]. This could explain why we found more heat-related social disparities in Montreal than in Paris.…”

“…Happiness research has in the past two decades clearly become an increasingly important research topic in socio-economic studies, in particular, in the context of demographic conditions (e.g., age, gender), welfare status (e.g., income, education, employment status) and social capital (e.g., marital status, community networks). We refer here to various important and evidence-based studies by Blanchflower and Oswald 2008, Tovar and Bourdeau-Lepage (2013), Clark (2003), Dolan, Peasgood, and White (2007), Ferrer-i-Carbonell and Gowdy (2007), Gerdtham and Johannesson (2001), and Putnam (2000). An important question is of course what the place-specific components are that shape feelings of happiness and wellbeing.…”
