Wear Resistance of Apparel Textiles: A Literature Survey

Abstract: THE following literature survey was prepared for use in conjunction with an investigation* upon wear and abrasion resistance of apparel textiles. The scope of the survey is intended to cover abstracts and articles in available periodicals which deal with textile and related fields and to assemble the observations and opinions of various individuals and groups. The material selected is confined to the subjects of wear, resistance to wear, and factors affecting wear, emphasis being placed upon wear by abrasion. A… Show more

“…Results on yarns correlate well with the Taber abrasion-resistance of fabrics made from these yarns, and can be used to determine the inherent yarn abrasion-resistance without the necessitiy of fabric preparation. THE GENERAL PROBLEM of evaluating the wear-resistance of textiles has received considerable attention both in the United States and other countries [4,5,6,7,14,15]. In virtually all cases it has been necessary to conduct field tests in end uses to obtain information on wear, because of the difficulty in correlating data observed in the laboratory with wear observed in service.…”

“…Schwartz's abrasion testing machine was constructed on the principle of applying friction by means of constant abrading on a surface to an elementary line, passing over a flexing bar of proper curvature at moderate speeds. A standard grade emery cloth is used as an abrasive (Hall & Kaswell, 1945).…”

“…There are many types of abrasion testing machines and different standard methods used worldwide, [11,12]. Since the 1930s scientists strived to clarify the confused terminology used in studying the wear resistance of textiles, [13][14][15][16]. The results of abrasion testing are determined by many physical and chemical factors depending on the use of the material, [13].…”
