Wear and Corrosion Resistance of Chromium–Vanadium Carbide Coatings Produced via Thermo-Reactive Deposition

Abstract: Chromium carbide, vanadium carbide, and chromium–vanadium mixture coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel via the thermo-reactive deposition/diffusion (TRD) technique. The carbides were obtained from a salt bath composed of molten borax, ferro-chrome, ferro-vanadium, and aluminum at 1020 °C for 4 h. Analysis of the morphology and microstructure of the coatings was done via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The hardness of the coatings was evaluated using nano-indent… Show more

“…It is meant that the electrochemical stability of 20# steel is superior to that of X60 and X80 steels. Alloying elements are effective factors affecting corrosion resistance [25,26]. The content of Mo in 20# steel is significantly higher than those in X60 and X80 steel, as shown in Table 1, which may be the main reason for its superior corrosion resistance.…”

“…In many applications, tool steels are coated with transition metal carbides to improve corrosion resistance. Some authors report the improvement in the corrosion resistance of AISI D2 (111,112,113,114,115,116,117) and AISI H13 115) tool steel with the production of a layer of chromium niobium carbide on the steel surface, and other works have reported that for tool steels the corrosion behavior could be more influenced by its phase composition that the nanocrystalline structure (118) .…”

“…Vanadium carbide (VC) is a refractory ceramic material used for hardening of tools and applied as coating for heat-resisting materials. Chromium carbide (Cr 3 C 2 ) is another carbide material with high hardness and corrosion resistance (Castillejo et al , 2019; Balbino et al , 2018). Hence, it is used for surface treatment of metals for the purpose of preventing the corrosion by thermal spray coatings.…”
