“…The wbaP mutant, IM6 isolated from the intestinal tissue of the cefepime treated mice, as well as the E. coli wbaP mutant that we generated for this study, exhibited increased capacity to invade cultured human colonocytes. This phenotype has been observed previously in hypocapsulated Salmonella enteritidis mutants, which although previously implicated in their enhanced ability to invade macrophage cells, were also found to be defective in swarm motility which is important for proliferation in the intracellular environment 66 . It is possible that the intracellular sub-MIC concentration of cefepime would not allow for the formation of intracellular bacterial communities or even for the bacteria to escape their initial phagocytosed membrane-bound organelles remaining in a quiescent state within these vesicles, but further investigation is required to rigorously address these questions.…”

“…The process of molting hens to obtain another cycle of egg production can be a contributor to shedding and spread within flocks [ 58 ]. As with O-antigen, the flagellar determinants of serotype also undergo tremendous variation that impacts virulence, environmental spread by swarming and swimming, and microbial communication through some branches of quorum sensing [ 59 , 60 ]. Taken together, these lines of research indicate that the evolution of S. enterica to colonize the reproductive tracts of birds and to transmit intergenerationally is a special virulence phenotype that likely requires immense selection pressure to maintain an optimized genome capable of such adaptability.…”

“…SpiC is an effector protein encoded by SPI-2, which is secreted by the Salmonella type III secretion system (T3SS) and injected into host cells ( 19 , 20 ). It has been demonstrated that deleting spiC gene significantly reduces the virulence of Salmonella in mouse and chicken models ( 21 ).…”
