Water Soluble Responsive Polymer Brushes

Abstract: Abstract:Responsive polymer brushes possess many interesting properties that enable them to control a range of important interfacial behaviours, including adhesion, wettability, surface adsorption, friction, flow and motility. The ability to design a macromolecular response to a wide variety of external stimuli makes polymer brushes an exciting class of functional materials, and has been made possible by advances in modern controlled polymerization techniques. In this review we discuss the physics of polymer b… Show more

“…Such systems are known as polymer brushes and can be prepared with variable grafting density, chain length, chemical composition and geometry. 1,[4][5][6] The important advantages of polymer brushes are the mechanical stability, due to the covalent bonding to the substrate, and the high swelling ratio, which causes a significant thickness change upon switching between swollen and collapsed state in good and bad solvents, respectively. This makes them particularly interesting for controlled release, 7 tunable assembly of coated nanoparticles, 8 responsive nanoactuators 9,10 or for antifouling surfaces.…”

“…The swelling behaviour of such systems exhibits some notable characteristics depending on the pH of the solvent, concentration and type of ions in the solution, and the grafting density of the brush. In particular, much attention has been paid to weak polyelectrolyte brushes, such as those considered in the present work, because their charge density is not fixed and can be tuned by varying the ionic strength of the surrounding medium [22,23].…”

“…Moreover, alumina ceramics have been successfully used as parts of lamps because of their high optical transmittance . Concerning the polymer substrates, grafted‐from polymer brushes have been established as stimuli‐responsive coatings . Their high mechanical stability, by reason of the covalent binding to the substrate, the tunable chain density and molecular weight, make them reasonably suitable to prepare highly adaptable smart coatings to a variety of requirements …”
