Water Quality and Organic Pollution with Health Risk Assessment in China: A Short Review

Abstract: Although water quality has been improved in the last two decades, water pollution by organic contaminants has remained a non-negligible issue in China. It is worthwhile to assess human exposure risks to waterborne organic contaminants and find the relation between them and carcinogenic risks. This work reviews the spatiotemporal patterns of water quality and typical organic contaminants in drinking water sources (i.e., surface water, groundwater, and tap water) in relation to age-standardized incidences of tot… Show more

“…Cost is often a key factor in less developed countries; thus, making use of appropriate design, including the use of existing nature-based solutions and conservation practices, can often be more attainable and cost-effective than more “engineered” forms of GSI . One strength of the environmental science and engineering community is that we have the ability to quantify real or perceived health benefits from improvements in water quality and quantity and access to green space. We also posit that promoting GSI in lower- and middle-income countries is entirely consistent with GSI as a tool to support environmental justice. One such example is the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) program in Indonesia and Fiji that focuses on using GSI approaches to integrate urban water management in informal settlements.…”

“…Although water quality has been improved in the last two decades, water pollution by organic contaminants has remained a non-negligible issue, so Chemical-Oxygen Demand (abbreviated as COD, unit: mg L −1 ) is often used as the main index to measure the degree of surface water pollution. 2,3…”

“…The geographic heterogeneity exhibited by global breast cancer clusters has raised particular attention to the link between environmental contaminants and the breast cancer risk [4,5]. As a critical medium connecting human and environmental exposure, the quality of drinking water is associated with the total cancer incidence and the mortality risk [6,7]. However, the ongoing uncertainty about the relationship between water contaminants and breast cancer has hampered global prevention efforts.…”
