Water budgets for freshwater aquaculture ponds with reference to effluent volume

Abstract:

This paper presents the consumptive water use for freshwater pond aquaculture for semi-intensive carps farming practices. The consumptive use of water includes evaporation loss, seepage loss and water exchanges requirements. The water requirement has been estimated to be10.3 m3/Kg of fish production under present study for semi-i… Show more

“…But they found consumptive water use (CWU‐6.38–5.61 m 3 /kg) to be lower in the higher density and attributed such reduction to the increased yield. In semi‐intensive IMC polyculture system, Sharma, Mohapatra, Das, Sarkar, and Chand () have estimated TWU to be 10.3 m 3 /kg fish out of which 7.6 m 3 /kg was the system associated requirement, thereby the CWU calculated to be 2.7 m 3 /kg fish. Boyd () has reported a CWU to range between 4 and 8 m 3 /kg fish in earthen ponds.…”

“…Exchanges of large water volumes have typically been used to control nutrient levels in grow-out ponds (Boyd & Tucker 1998), but as resource limitations increase, the use of and energy required to exchange large volumes of water is unsustainable, providing impetus to improve water productivity through wastewater treatment and reuse (Sharma et al 2013). Furthermore, the ex change of large water volumes dilutes wastewater and makes the removal of solids difficult, especially in saline systems where settling of solids is reduced (Mesquita et al 2011).…”
