Warts under the Dermoscope

Abstract: Although dermoscopy was primarily designed to facilitate in vivo diagnosis of skin tumors, recent advances indicate that it is also useful in the diagnosis of common skin infections and infestations. As such, dermoscopy links the research fields of dermatology and entomology to a field of "entomodermoscopy". In this article, we give an overview of current applications of dermoscopy in the diagnosis of warts.

“…Red dots represent thrombosed vessels in the projected papillae, and white halo was due to elongated and thickened rete ridges, hyperkeratotic keratin (Figure 5A-C). It should be noted that common warts and other variants of warts demonstrate a white halo around red dots (8). In contrast, a yellow halo was conspicuously noted in plantar warts and can be attributed to the significantly thickened stratum corneum and seepage of blood in the keratin layers.…”

“…Dermoscopic features of wart include presence of grouped papillae, with dotted or loop vessels, and/or hemorrhagic points surrounded by whitish halos and irregularly distributed blackheads giving a frogspawn appearance. [ 6 ] In our case also, multiple papillae with central red dots surrounded by whitish halo and discrete black dots were seen suggesting a frogspawn appearance.…”

“…Dermoscopy of palmoplantar warts reveals multiple prominent hemorrhages within a well‐defined, yellowish papilliform surface in which skin lines are interrupted. Disappearance of these dermoscopic features could be used in monitoring the response to treatment 14 …”
