Professor Hansgeorg Schnöckel zum 60. Geburtstag gewidmet Tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)tetrahedran 3 ist in mehrfacher Hinsicht von Interesse. So sollte bei 3 der ¹Korsett-Effektª, d. h. die Stabilisierung durch die Anhäufung von vier voluminösen Substituenten, [1] wegen der längeren C-Si-Bindungen geringer sein als beim Tetra-tert-butyl-Derivat 1, [1] dem ersten stabilen Tetrahedran. [2] Andererseits sollten die vier s-Donorsubstituenten in 3 das Tetrahedran-Ringgerüst besonders begünstigen, eine Erfahrung, die wir bereits beim Tri-tert-butyl-(trimethylsilyl)tetrahedran 2 gemacht haben. [3] Für das Tetrahedran 3 ist als Summe dieser Einflüsse eine hohe Barriere für die thermische Isomerisierung zum entsprechenden Cyclobutadien 8 zu erwarten. Ein anderer Aspekt ist noch verlockender: Bedingt durch den hohen s-Charakter der vom Ringgerüst wegweisenden Bindungen [1c, 4] sollten sich die Trimethylsilyl-Gruppen in 3 leicht abspalten lassen. Damit zeichnet sich ein Weg zum Tetralithiotetrahedran [5] ± und vielleicht sogar zum Tetrahedran selbst ± ab.Für die Synthese des Tetrahedrans 3 bietet sich die Photoisomerisierung von Tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadien 8 an. Analog zu Tetra-tert-butyl- [6] und Tri-tert-butyl-(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadien, [3] den Ausgangssubstanzen für die Tetrahedrane 1 und 2, ist auch 8 durch die ¹Cyclopropenyldiazomethan-Routeª zugänglich. Die Mitteilung von Sekiguchi et al. [7] über eine alternative Synthese von 8, nämlich durch milde Oxidation des zugehörigen Cyclobutadien-Dianions, ist für uns in Absprache mit der japanischen Arbeitsgruppe Anlass, über unsere eigenen Bemühungen zur Herstellung von 8 und 3 zu berichten (Schema 1). Synthese von 7, 3 und 8 sowie Nachweisreaktionen.Durch Kupplung von Tris(trimethylsilyl)cyclopropenyliumhexachloroantimonat [8] 4 mit lithiiertem (Trimethylsilyl)diazomethan 5 lässt sich das Trimethylsilyl[1,2,3-tris(trimethylsilyl)-2-cyclopropen-1-yl]diazomethan 6 in 11 % Ausbeute als gelbes Öl gewinnen. Daneben entstehen sechs weitere Produkte, die alle aufgeklärt werden konnten.Es hat vieler Versuche bedurft, die optimalen Bedingungen für eine Umwandlung von 6 in das Cyclobutadien 8 herauszufinden.
