Volume calculation of rats' organs and its application in the validation of the volume relation between the abdominal cavity and the hernial sac in incisional hernias with "loss of abdominal domain"

Abstract: BackgroundThe calculation of the volume ratio between the hernia sac and the abdominal cavity of incisional hernias is based on tomographic sections as well as the mathematical formula of the volume of the ellipsoid, which allows determining whether this is a giant hernia or there is a "loss of domain". As the images used are not exact geometric figures, the study of the volume of two solid organs of Wistar rats was performed to validate these calculations.AimTo correlate two methods for determining the volume… Show more

“…Tumor sizes were recorded and melanoma lesions, which appear spontaneously at the perianal and ventral tail regions, were mapped. Tumor dimensions were measured with a caliper and tumor volumes calculated by approximating a sphere volume, i.e., using the formula for sphere volume = 4/3 π x radius 1 x radius 2 x radius 3 (mm 3 ) 51 . Deeply infiltrating tumors were rejected for treatment due to possible measurement errors.…”

“…Twenty-five Wistar rats ( Rattus Norvegicus, var. Albinus, Rodentia, Mammalia ), which are genetically similar and present not only isogenic line, but reliable results in studies with small numbers of animals 4 , 24 were randomly distributed in five groups with five animals each; before surgical interventions they were kept in individual cages with access to standardized food and water ad libitum, at 25° C room temperature and a 12 h photoperiod. The animals, with an average weight of 339 g were anesthetized with intraperitoneal injection of ketamine hydrochloride (80 mg/kg) and xylazine (10 mg/kg), being held a median incision with 4 cm in length, opening of the abdominal cavity in linea alba measuring 3.5 cm and a suture in the middle third of each side of the incision was made, with the eversion of the edges of the abdominal rectum muscle without encompassing the peritoneum, thus creating a defect with 3.5x1.5 cm.…”

“…Samples of kidney, liver, spleen and faeces were also collected from each rat and stored at −20 °C for further analyses. The dimensions of the spleen were recorded for each rat and splenic size was calculated using the formula described by Araujo et al. (2014) in order to investigate any association between Angiostrongylus infection and splenomegaly.…”
