“…The violet flowers, the shrub and its fruits are often mentioned in ancient literature in relation to different cultural usages (Bohnert and Hahn 1990). Nowadays, preparations of different parts of the plant are used in complementary medicine for indications spanning from the treatment of male impotence to female cycle disorders (Odenthal 1998;Baytop 1999). Hobbs (1996) reported that (1) V. agnus-castus is an effective remedy for emmeniopathy, including amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, and menorrhea; (2) through estrogen hypersecretion before menstruation in premenstrual tension, long-term use of V. agnus-castus reduced those symptoms and prevented relapse of the disease; and (3) the function of the corpus luteum deficiency syndrome improved with V. agnus-castus due to the crinogenic effect of luteinizing hormone.…”
