Vitamin D levels in relation to low back pain during adolescence

Abstract: AbstractThis study aimed to investigate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level and low back pain (LBP) among adolescents while adjusting for potential confounders pertinent to this age group including the weight of school bags, BMI and physical activity. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 760 randomly selected adolescents in middle schools. Data on LBP and the risk factors for LBP were collected from parents by a self-administered questionnaire and fr… Show more

“…The study was conducted within a project that aimed to assess vitamin D status in middle schoolchildren (11–16 years) in Kuwait. The details of the project have been described previously [ 37 , 38 ]. In this project, a nationally representative sample of middle schoolchildren was selected using probability proportional to size sampling method.…”

“…The study group comprised a nationally representative sample of schoolgirls at public middle schools in all six governorates (provinces) in Kuwait that were selected randomly by probability proportional to size sampling method. This was conducted in the context of a project that aimed to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among middle school children (details of the project, including the sampling methods, have been published previously [Al‐Taiar et al, 2018; Al‐Taiar et al, 2020]). Briefly, in 2016 (February–March), a team of trained data collectors drew blood samples and collected data on sociodemographic factors from the parents of selected students through a self‐administered questionnaire, while the data on factors related to lifestyle such as physical activity and smoking were collected by face‐to‐face interviews with the students using a structured questionnaire ( N = 722 schoolgirls).…”

“…All other biological markers were measured in an accredited clinical biochemistry laboratory in a teaching hospital, under strict quality control. The details of these measurements have been published previously including complete blood count (CBC), iron, ferritin, transferrin, transferrin saturation, vitamin B 12 , and intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) (Al‐Taiar et al, 2018; Al‐Taiar et al, 2020).…”

“…Vitamin D receptors were found in various tissues and organs. Vitamin D can directly or indirectly regulate more than 200 genes, and its effects include promoting cell differentiation, inhibiting cell apoptosis, and inhibiting angiogenesis and anti-inflammatory [ 15 ].…”
