Visualization of irrigation fluid flow and calculation of its velocity distribution in the anterior chamber by particle image velocimetry

Abstract: Particle image velocimetry enabled the visualization of irrigation fluid flow and quantification of its velocity distribution in different planes of the anterior chamber during cataract surgery. These data are essential for evaluating the safety and efficacy of new surgical settings and devices during phacoemulsification.

“…Two typical inflow positions in PC were considered: along the pupillary margin; at the root of PC. Figure  2 is the scheme of these two conditions, in the left diagram, inflow point is along the pupillary margin; in the right diagram, inflow point is at the root of PC [13,19]. …”

“…As a whole flow field measurement system, PIV can be intuitive and non-interfering to the flow field of target observation area [11,12]. It is a relatively new attempt to introduce PIV to intraocular aqueous humor flow study [13]. This method enables visualization of the direction and calculation of the velocity of fluid flow by analyzing pairs of images of small particles captured at short intervals.…”

“…Convection occurring in the lens capsule during I/A has been reported previously, indicating that convection of I/A in the capsule affects the behavior of the IOL. 19 , 20 It has also been documented that during the actual I/A procedure, the IOL rotates while unfolding in the lens capsule. 21 In a previous report, we mentioned that the behavior of the IOL within the lens sac during I/A might affect the amount of residual OVD.…”

“…Kaji et al performed an experimental study to visualize irrigation fluid flow and calculate its velocity distribution in the anterior chamber during phacoemulsification without ultrasound by particle image velocimetry. 25 The tip of an ultrasound handpiece was inserted into the anterior chamber of porcine eyes through a corneal incision. Irrigation fluid was mixed with fluorescein-labeled liposomes as tracer particles, which could be illuminated by a laser with images captured with a CCD camera.…”
