Visualization of Arterio-Venous Shunts by Cinefluorography in the Lungs of Normal Dogs.

Abstract: 239presumed to contain the major portion of antibodies.1. Total protein, albumin, and 5 globulin fractions were determined by electrophoresis in the plasma of samples of cord blood and of venous blood from 11 women whose pregnan'cies were uncomplicated. Similar samples were obtained for electrophoretic analysis from 2 1 women whose pregnancies were complicated by toxemia of pregnancy and other diseases. 2. For the samples representing uncomplicated pregnancy total protein values for venous blood were higher th… Show more

“…The lack of correlation between the mean pulmonary artery pressure and the per cent of the cardiac output shunted weighs against the opening of potential anatomical pathways for shunting which, though normally present, are usually not patent; this is a mechanism proposed but not proven by animal experimentation (39)(40)(41)(42) and human autopsy studies (43,44). Furthermore, our data indicate that intracardiac shunts occasionally do occur but were relatively infrequent among our subjects.…”

“…Besides recruiting unused vessels, arteriovenous shunts can be created allowing pathways for MPs, which are larger than capillaries, to pass relatively unhindered into the venous circulation. In fact, MPs that are >25 μm have been found in the pulmonary venous blood after injection possibly due to arteriovenous shunts in the lung [15, 16, 54-57]. …”

“…There seems to be good evidence that in the resting basal state not all pulmonary capillaries are functional at any given moment (16). A fair amount of evidence has also accumulated that pulmonary arteriovenous anastomoses exist in mammalian (16)(17)(18)(19) 3. As a result of the increased pulmonary blood flow there may occur increased pressure distention of the pulmonary vascular bed (20); this may conceivably be followed by a progressive decrease in intrinsic or neurogenically controlled vascular "tone" as a compensatory phenomenon.…”
