Visual outcome following optic neuritis: A 5-year review

Abstract: This study confirms widely documented evidence that there is improvement in visual acuity after an attack of optic neuritis. Even though the risk of developing multiple sclerosis following optic neuritis is said to be low in blacks, these patients should still be followed up for sometime especially as some may go on to develop other complications of demyelination.

“…Other studies which included ON patients of all ages also reported better outcomes than our observation. A study of 27 native African patients conducted in Nigeria reported initial BCVA ≤ 20/200 in 60% and only 9% at 12-week follow-up [ 7 ]. However, the study only included 1 patient who was older than 50 years.…”

“…In ON patients, ethnicity has been documented as an important factor influencing clinical features and the outcome [ 6 ]. It has been identified that NMOSD is more likely to develop in Asia, whereas MS is more prevalent in western countries [ 7 ]. Previously, we reported a cohort of Chinese ON patients with atypical clinical features and poor recovery [ 8 ].…”

“…Optic neuritis is one of the most common causes of acute visual loss in the young population [ 2 , 20 ]. Visual acuity spontaneously increases over days and weeks, but the improvement is completed almost in 2 or 3 months [ 21 ].…”

“…Optic neuritis (ON) is an acute demyelinating inflammatory disease of the optic nerve and primarily influences young females [ 1 , 2 ]. It is usually related to multiple sclerosis (MS) or neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or can be seen isolated [ 2 ]. It is observed after paranasal sinuses infections or viral infections [ 3 – 5 ].…”

“…6 The outcome of optic neuritis in the Asian countries has been shown to be poorer than the west. 7,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] There are a few studies from developing countries in Asia and Africa which have shown similar visual outcomes as the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial and conflict with the other studies from similar geographic locations. 8,18 A study on optic neuritis from India has shown a clinical profile and outcome similar to majority of studies from the Asian continent and significantly different from the West.…”
