Visual Outcome and Prognostic Factors of Optic Neuritis: A Perspective from the East

Abstract: Optic neuritis is an inflammatory disorder of the optic nerve often resulting in a demyelination process. In the west and in Caucasian populations, the optic neuritis treatment trial demonstrated good recovery and excellent visual outcomes with a significant risk of conversion into multiple sclerosis. However recent reports from the Asian and African continents have noted a significantly different clinical profile and outcomes are reported to be worse than the West. Prognostic factors for visual recovery in op… Show more

“…Their study supports the need for early treatment and contradicts the results of the Optic nerve treatment trial 15 . While previous study mentioned that absence of retroorbital pain has been shown to result in a poorer visual outcome as compared to patients with retro-orbital pain 16 . According to Du Y et al disc swelling is another important parameter which has been evaluated as a prognostic marker for visual outcome.…”

“…5 Prognostic factors of visual recovery in ON are visual acuity at presentation, race, ethnicity, comorbidities, ocular signs such as retro bulbar pain, optic disc edema, and retinal thinning in optical coherence tomography (OCT). 6 OCT is a rapid, non-invasive, non-contrast, transpupillary, and reproducible imaging technique using low coherence interferometry to produce cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve head (ONH) with high temporal accuracy. 7 Its capacity to depict the ONH, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and cellular layers of the macula enables quantitative and qualitative assessment of optic nerve diseases.…”

“…1 It has been observed that the clinical profile and outcome of optic neuritis among adults in the Western population differs significantly from that in the East and this may hold true for pediatric optic neuritis. 2 The purpose of this study is to retrospectively review the cases of optic neuritis among a population of less than 20 years of age at a tertiary care hospital in order to understand the various clinical aspects of these patients and compare it with the Caucasian population.…”
