Visual inspection in evaluation of bridge condition

Abstract: Visual inspection in evaluation of bridge condition Given that visual inspection is vital when evaluating the condition of bridges, it plays a crucial role in planning the special maintenance works. At the beginning of 2012, a research was conducted in HAC (Croatian Highways) aiming to standardize evaluation of bridges. The bridge engineers had assessed a certain group of buildings, and their results were afterwards analysed using the mathematical statistics methods. The obtained results showed weaknesses in t… Show more

“…Therefore, the importance of monitoring, documenting, and managing the state of bridge health cannot be overstated. A common, yet vital, part of bridge monitoring is the inspection of bridges by visual means [5][6][7]. These attributes of visual bridge inspection are reinforced by inspection regimes established by transportation authorities' [8], where the initial detection of defects in concrete bridges is usually through visual inspection; this is a technique that also has the capability of detecting much damage in steel and timber bridges [9][10][11][12].…”

“…Most standard bridges in the road or rail network are assessed based on visual inspection. However, a visual inspection can be subjective and depends heavily on the experience of the inspector [2]. Most damage and material deterioration, such as corrosion of reinforcement in concrete, can only be detected by visual inspection at an advanced stage, when it is too late for proactive bridge management [3].…”

“…Similarly Tenžera et al (2012) studied the reliability of visual inspection in the evaluation of bridge condition in Croatia. The difficulties linked to a uniform response in visual inspection is observed to be dependent on a number of psychological factors, such as expectations, attitude, type of education, quantity of information, motivation, sociocultural influences etc.…”
