Visceral Fatness and Insulin Sensitivity in Women With a Previous History of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: OBJECTIVE -The purpose of this study was to investigate the insulin sensitivity and visceral fatness in women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), who are prone to develop type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS -A 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) performed 1 year postpartum identified 21 GADϪ women with previous GDM and impaired glucose tolerance (GDM-IGT). Sixty age-and BMI-matched women with normal glucose tolerance (GDM-NGT) were selected by 1:3 matching to the GDM-IGT group. Anot… Show more

“…Changes in regional fat distribution and increased intra-abdominal visceral fat accumulation have been reported during normal pregnancy (22). Post-partum visceral fat was found to be greater in patients with previous GDM who also had current impaired glucose tolerance (23). However, to the best of our knowledge, there is not enough evidence about changes in visceral fat composition in pregnant women with GDM.…”

“…During pregnancy, women with GDM display metabolic abnormalities similar to those of people with type 2 diabetes (T2D), such as insulin resistance and reduced pancreatic b-cell compensation for that resistance (2). GDM most often resolves at delivery but insulin resistance and insulin secretion defects remain common in the post partum period (3,4,5).…”

“…Visceral fat has been shown to contribute to the development of impaired glucose metabolism in women with history of GDM (Lim et al, 2007). Markedly elevated expression of leptin in visceral adipose depot of women with GDM may thus play a role in the development of endocrine dysfunction of visceral fat and later on also in the development of GDM.…”
