Virtual Reality Simulation in Neurosurgery

Abstract: Neurosurgeons are faced with the challenge of learning, planning, and performing increasingly complex surgical procedures in which there is little room for error. With improvements in computational power and advances in visual and haptic display technologies, virtual surgical environments can now offer potential benefits for surgical training, planning, and rehearsal in a safe, simulated setting. This article introduces the various classes of surgical simulators and their respective purposes through a brief su… Show more

“…3,4,6,12,13 However, strategies used in general surgery may not be as applicable in spine surgery, where laparoscopic procedures are limited and intricate 3D spinal anatomy is difficult to appropriately replicate on computer simulators. Furthermore, virtual screw placement planning on 2D computer screens has been shown to not clearly translate into an improvement in hands-on performance.…”

“…Similarly, The SuRgical Planner TM , a novel surgical rehearsal platform (SRP) developed by Surgical Theater LLC, approved by FDA in 2013, offers surgeons the opportunity to rehearse surgery prior to operation [14][15][16]. By using SRP, we rehearsed the sequence of utilizing the Pineapple bur and Kerrison rongeurs to resect bilaterally fused TMJ and coronoid processes prior to operation.…”

“…Numerosos estudos relatam métodos modernos de simulação e recentes revisões resumem essas informações [25][26][27]. Indubitavelmente, no futuro, os simuladores se tornarão uma parte integrante do currículo da maioria dos programas cirúrgicos.…”
